Mechanic or Parts changer?
#16
When you own a 928 you are all three.
Mechanic - find out how and what it does so you dont have to do it again.$$$
Parts changer - because some things on a 928 just cant be figured out - just replaced.
God - because when I'm driving it thats how you feel!!!

Then the poll needs a fourth choice wherein the time-value of diagnosis versus parts-swapping is considered.

There should be some consideration for the potential cost of parts-swapping as a 928 diagnostic method. It can get real expensive real quick, and still leave you with the original symptoms. Along with that big box of "known-good spares".
The good news is that there are others who fall into all the categories, and they share their learnings here so that 'experts' like myself can regurgitate and reprocess those learnings for ourselves and others, as if they were the results of personal experience. It's the old education vs experience discussion again. I want to learn as much as possible from the experiences of others, then from my own educated experience to prove that the other guys really were right. Good news is that I can polish up 'experience' and make it sound God-like. It's a gift. I often wish I was as smart as I often think I am...

Well, I used to be a mechanic, but I'm becoming more of a parts changer. Knowing how to do all the fancy things like rebuilding a motor helps (especially with 20+ year old cars as things go wrong), but I really don't want to spend enormous amounts of time working on things anymore, I'd rather spend it riding. Still, when a better mousetrap is invented, I'll learn how to apply it when the next opportunity comes up (porkensioner, constantine clamp, etc.).

I typically want to know how it works so I can figure out why it broke and not just how to fix it, but also fix any auxiliary stuff that may have caused the problem in the first place.
I took an 87 Jeep Cherokee in for repairs...The service tech made a comment that the broken part would not be covered by warranty, then proceeded to take a hammer to the part next to it, then said "There you go...it's covered if this is broken too."

Mechanic here
I commonly troubleshoot to board level when applicable, this being electrical issues. I recently had a problem with the wiper relay ( rear ), bad relay, did all the fault finding to get to that conclusion, so,...put in a new one ,,right? Nope, just pulled that one apart and re-soldered the bad track.
Use the same methods with mechanical problems, however, they are usually more obvious.

that is a def yes to the first one, and a no to the last one. And she is very independant. She isnt a NA girl after all. Though I will admit it was pretty funny watching her play pool as she is only 5'2 and the tables were pretty damn big!
