Default S4 Back On The Road!

Hey guys,

EDIT: a huge help to the entire list! I used a bunch of the write ups, the search function was my friend and of course misc emails and phone calls.

THANKS GUYS!

Just wanted to enjoy the moment, finally got the '88 S4 back on the road. It's been in the garage up on jack stands for over a year.

Got laid off and finally got the time to work on the S4. Some of the repairs: radiator end tank, brakes, clutch hydraulics, fuel lines, new Sparco R100 seat, and some other stuff I'm not remembering right now.

Started it up last night and its running great. The new rmb is awesome. Took it for a couple of shake down runs and its all good, no leaks or problems.

Will be taking it down to watch historic races here tomorrow for a bit longer shake down run - 1 hr each way. I can't wait.

I've never done most of this stuff, so I'm pretty happy.

Ed

What the brakes looked like before I installed new rotors, pads, lines, and painted the calipers and rotors.

Rear brakes, fronts were similar:

Parts and supplies:

Trashed ABS wiring harness - all 4 corners:

Broken/missing wire on ABS harness:

A bracket I whipped up for the connector to replace the missing bracket:

Temp fix - yes its ugly, but its temporary, so don't taze me bro:

Temp fix installed:

My helper, my daughter Katie. Apply some masking tape in prep for painting.

I had already stripped and sanded them.

Payoff:

I wire brushed these and clear coated them just for the hell of it. I have a really hard time putting anything dirty back on my cars and dirtbikes, so it takes me forever to do any jobs on these old cars.

I put out a short notice invite for local 928's to come on by, and Elliot came over and helped me install the rotors, lines, and calipers. We then did a quick bleed.

Thanks Elliott!

Front rotor installed:

With calipers:

Dreaded brake master cylinder replacement:

Managed to get a mini wrench on the right side nut:

Reaching in there - note the filthy cam cover:

New m/c with string attached to the clutch m/c to help pull it through the firewall. That job was tough. Also notice the cleaned up cam cover. Not perfect, but not bad for a quick clean up:

Some of the offending parts: brake m/c, clutch m/c, clutch line, clutch slave:

Getting ready to replace the fuel lines. My '88 S4 5sp had 4 soft lines in the engine bay.

Hmmm, that's interesting.

Front line replaced:

Line by the passenger (US) side front cam cover:

Two lines by the firewall:

The two lines by the firewall as they came out of the engine (top line is the one from the front of the engine):

Replaced the heater valve while I was in there:

Ed - looks great! The best part of this whole project is that your daughter helped out. That is what memories are made of. Tell her that the folks here on Rennlist suggest her Dad get her her own 928 when she is 16. But in order for that to happen she has to help out with your present car so she undersands how to take care of it.

Great job!

Some fluids. Coolant is in. Oil change and tranny gear oil change soon:

Cleaned up engine. You concours guys should have seen it before. Its actually at a point now where I feel like I can "start" cleaning it:

New belts - air pump hose deleted:

Oil squirt in cylinders, engine rotated by hand 10 times. All buttoned up and ready to tap my heals together 3 times and fire it up:

Success! It started right up. I let it run for a bit and it settled into a nice idle. Good oil pressure, water temp steady, no leaks! And the rmb sounded awesome.

Shut it off, installed the wheels, took it off the jack stands, checked the tire pressure, installed the new Sparco seat and headed down to the gas station to top off the tires.

It ran great. I couldn't believe it:

Lots more work to be done, but for now, I'm back on the road with a safe freshened up S4.

Again, huge thanks to the list!

Very cool Ed. I wish I had the skills to do that kind of work myself.

AMEN to That !! Just tremendous looking job on those calipers. I have a 1988 Indischrot Red #0714 w/ turbo twists..17 not 18 . I was thinking the red calipers would be a bit much w/ the red car ...am I wrong ?? Also have been toying with getting an RMB, worry a little about the decibel levels living in a large Metro area suburb...hmmmmm.... Love to see some daylight pics..Good Job !!
