I had a failure like this once. flatbedded home , at some cost to the front spoiler, and dignity. got the pump off.....wife suggested reverse polarity volts. mmmm I could have done that in place. Try it, clunk, spit, whirrrrrrr. Put it back on, didnt ever stop again, over several years of use....If there is debris in it, you need to find the source.

Brent,
So sorry to hear of the difficulty. I'm sure you'll have it operational again soon with ALL that great help around. See ya' at OCIC.

Thanks Gary, No difficulty here, I'm having fun with it. I expected stuff like this. Isn't this part of being a 928 owner? I'm going to get Andy's FP early this afternoon and hopefully it will fire up.

Wally, I did check and yes I got 12 vdc at the FP terminals. Thanks for the one last DX test before changing out the FP.

Default Houston, We Have Fire!

Well now I have a buzzing sound coming from the right rear. Good to hear that again. Andy's old high mileage FP did the trick. So I'm up and running but not too far until all the replacement parts come in. Man was that FF full of nasty a** stuff. I didn't touch the internal FP but I'm sure it's toast. There was no way I was going to put the old FF back on even for testing purposes. Managed to find a Wix FF just to get by until I get the Mahle in.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice with the DX. Ed and Andy, I owe you one.

Brent,

Holy moly! I haven't been on Rennlist until today to see your post. Sorry to hear that you had an issue with my ex, but glad to hear that you already have it sorted out. Thank goodness this didn't happen on the 2000 mile trek that you took right when you bought the car.

All the best,

Glad to hear it worked out.

I think I'm going to carry the FF and FP I've got on order as on-board spares, along with the right flare wrenches so I can replace mine any time on the road. I can just see this happening on a long trip (like the DFW OCIC). I used to think spare relays, jumper wire, and fuses were enough, but it does seem like fuel pumps crap out fairly often.

Interestingly enough, the last time my fuel pump died, it was right after a long trip, too (the return trip from SITM 2003). Maybe they do sense the importance of the mission and then die when they know you're home safe and sound. Or maybe not.

I'm also guessing that a clogged filter probably leads to a premature death of the fuel pump(s), too.

So, Cameron, is gas in Florida especially nasty, or were you in the habit of tanking up at K-Mart in the middle of the night, while the fuel delivery truck unloaded?

Exactly the same thing happened to me this spring on an extended run. Went over some whoops in the road due to Highway construction, and everything shut down....net result new fuel pump and life's been good again. (1990 S4). (The flatbed and pump weren't cheap though that far from home, on business and W/O backup).

Funny you should mention that. I've been going over what had just happened before we lost power. Kind of driving my wife crazy with the whole thing. Seems we hit a bridge expansion joint exceptionally hard. I really didn't give it much thought though. Now, my guess is the in tank FP has been going down hill since the Ft. Lauderdale trip. The hard bump shook up things enough to send debris to the main FP. I'll know when I pull it next weekend. The experience has been fun and I got a chance to buy some of those cool metric flared wrenches.

Default The Final Note.

Well I finally got my hands on a new in tank FP. Time to pull the old one and see what I got. The pictures should be self-explanatory. The real story here is it came out in three separate pieces. I was able to grab the rubber hose part with my fingers. The pump it's self, I had to reach the some really long needle nose pliers. Note now the pump end of the hose is all puckered up. Look familiar?
She is running smooth now. Looks like we will make it to OCIC. Thanks again for all the help guys.
