Has anybody ever polished a set of man hole covers?

You will find that the wheels have a very, very tough anodize (probably sulfuric acid anodize) finish that will take a lot of sanding/grinding before you can start polishing.

The professional guys have the wheels chemically stripped BEFORE they start grinding and polishing because that anodized surface is by design hard and resists corrosion. Once removed the wheels will corrode and need to be polished a bit from time to time.

There is an acid for aluminum wheels that is available at any truck shop ( tractor trailer). It will etch the wheels and make a nice clean white surface to start from. It is ALOT of work. I recomend hiring a local "will work for food" worker. You could make them a dollar menu millionaire.
