Recovering seats-Any advice on a vendor?

I have to replace the leather in my 83 S. I'm going to be changing from the bljue interior to all black or black and yellow. I happened across a very nice set of front seats from an 85 S (the passenger seat is near flawless) but in looking at them last night it looks like they won't match up due to the power functions.

My question is this, who do you guys suggest for leather replacement? I noticed an auction on ebay for a company called Iggee that look like slip ons. I'd really rather do a full replacement but haven't seen anything for the 928S online. Any advice?

Also, I'm probably going to have at least one of the 85 S seats available if someone in Dallas needs it and a bunch of the rear seat pieces in blue. Is there any protocal for posting trade bait or freebies?

Thanks for helping out a newbie!

I would get in touch with either Rob Budd (http://www.928leather.com/) or Paul Champagne (http://www.designpaulchampagne.com/PorscheLeather.html). They both do amazing work.

Tell us more, what problems are you having installing the 85 seats in the 83?

Shouldn't be an issue, all you have to do is change the power supply connector.

The 85 seats have 4 power motors under the seat bottom at each corner. I didn't get the rails for them so i was going to attempt to mount them to the 83 seat railings which don't match up. I'm not really sure if the 83 and 85 have different power functions. There are only 2 switches on the 85 seats and 4 on the 83. I can't seem to post pics yet or I'd show where my problem is.

+1 to what DR said, it won't be that hard to make the 85 seats work, maybe just some minor wiring or connectors.

Paul and Rob have work that speaks for itself, and with either of them I would ship the seats and have them do the installation.

Pretty sure anybody can say free come and get it, but selling requires a paid membership. Well worth it for many items, without the fuss of ebay, but maybe not for as much as items sell for on ebay.

I'm not really looking to "sell" anything, I'll just have a lot of leftovers after I'm done with the interior and the tranny and would like to maybe help another if I can or make a trade if I need something else.

I've redone the leather in both my Mazda and my wife's SUV so I think I can redo the covers myself, just not wanting to pay as much as it would cost to just buy a clean set out of a wrecker.

Get the rails that go with the seats. On my 85 the "rails" are where the motor lives and the seat belts attach, unless I'm not understanding what you are referring to.

To have rennlist host the images for picts you need a membership, but if you use a third party image hosting service (like http://imageshack.us/ ) you can cut and paste a link in your posts and the images should show up fine. I'm the last one to push membership, but seems like it would be the easiest way for you to post images and offer items for sale.

If there is a seat more difficult to get right than the ones in a 928 I haven't seen them. Most professional reupholstery efforts leave a LOT to be desired. Nice seats out of a wreck will run about half the cost of new skins in Porsche grade leather. Really pretty good, but not "nice" seats from a wreck are even less.

Trades I think fall in the same category as selling, requires a membership to post on rennlist.

Many here choose to give items away, many choose to sell a few things to manage the addiction, its whatever you prefer.

Since your in TX I would suggest Paul Champagne. He's an artist with 928 seats and he's also in TX.

Paul Champagne. And do something interesting!

Is there any other models that you can rob seats from that will fit? The cushioning from the 83 seats got really wet where the car sat (windows were partially down for a while) and they smell pretty bad now. I juts thought that the 85 seats would be my best option but never really thought about flipping them over and checking out the rails. I think the guy who sold them to me used the rails for a seat swap in his 944.

I'll probably just do a membership as soon as I have a list of stuff to offer up. I've already received enough advice that I feel like I should be paying something. I'll post some pics tonight and see if anybody has any thoughts on the swap out.

Has anyone gone the route of the "covers" from Iggee?

Fabio421 06-23-2009 05:15 PM

I bought the Iggee covers about three or more years ago. They look OK. After awhile they stretch and get a little loose. I would say that they are great to keep your seats covered until you can afford to recover them. I wouldn't use them as a permanant solution.

bulldog24 06-23-2009 05:15 PM

Wow! Paul C is a genius! Those are gorgeous! I may just throw some sheepskins on there until I can afford to have him recover my old style seats.

I would go whitout any hesitation with Paul Champagne.

Can't tell about the others.

danglerb 06-23-2009 05:27 PM

Everything from almost any other Porsche should fit, I've got manual 79 928 seats "almost" installed in my 85. Two issues for me, had to drill out the mounting rail due to a change in the size of mounting bolts, and 85 has the seat belt on the "rail" of the seat, and 79 mounts to the next to the seat or directly to the frame in one of the bolt holes unused by the rail.

Posts some picts of your seat bottoms and somebody should be able to hook you up.
