928 relay question
Hi, I have a 1986 S2 Euro Auto.
and I wanted to ask what is the ' XIV Starter relay ' ? what is it used for?
also I was having some starting problems before and changed the 3 critical relays, should I change this relay aswell? and also the XVI EZK ignition system relay?..
thanks

The starter relay is used with the safety start switch on automatic transmission cars to allow starting only in neutral or park.
If the starter spins the engine, it is functioning correctly, and is not involved in any starting problem.
"Starting problems" needs to be defined - do you mean:
- The starter will not spin the engine?
- The starter spins the engine, but the engine will not run?
- The starter spins the engine, the engine starts but dies quickly?
Very different problems...

Lots of possibilities...
- Nothing to do with the starter or starter relay.
- Possible that it is one of the critical relays, but not too likely. They usually keep the car from running at all.
When you are asking for help, it is impossible to give too much info, and difficult to give enough. Some questions:
- Does it make any difference whether the engine is cold or warm?
- Does it make any difference whether the weather is cold or warm?
- Does it always crank and run perfectly when you try it immediately after the engine stalls? Sometimes? Never?
- Once the engine starts and runs, does it run perfectly?
- Is there any fuel odor after the engine stalls?
- Is the idle speed correct on the engine?
- Can you hear any hissing from the intake manifold area while the engine is running?
- Is there anything else that you can tell us about the problem?
