I find it interesting that the TSB refers to 944 S2 and turbo rods also. I know they have far less issues than the 928 rods do and the S2 has no known issues but that is probably because they are at their power limits from teh factory.
I know nothing about 944S2 and 951 engines- do they have crank oiling or detonation issues?

944's are notorious for spinning the #2 rod bearing. My 944S was never tracked and always good oil every 3,000 miles. One day in traffic it started knocking, destroyed the engine.

The S was a different story but the S2 and turbo didn't have these issues AFAIK. I sold my S2 with over 100k miles on it. The current owner has done extensive work to it and it has closer to 150k miles no issues at least not with the engine.

Turbo's have the same oiling issue as the 8V non turbo and the S:

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...ing-issue.html

It's rare for a street 944 of any model to throw a rod bearing.
I'm curious to know what they did with the S2 to "fix" the problem.

At minumum, the R1 rods would be replaced with better the better R2 rods. Custom rods would be preferred for peace of mind, depending of what is available.

I have been told that the stock pistons are very good and only need to be drilled for oil return in the ring set.

I wish I could help. Although I enjoyed my 944 S2 it is gone to a new home. I do recall that their is a replacement interval for the rod bearings IIRC it was around 100k miles. This is usually done when the rear seal of the balance shaft requires replacement and can be easily enough done with the engine still in the car.

Greg B sent me an early piston and R1 rod i was going to give you to complete your set so youve got 8 again. I couldnt think of a better purpose for the think honestly.

There are chunks missing out of #2 and #6, (6 is much worse than 2, 2 just got pushed up into the valves while 6 kept getting pulled into the melee) and somehow #5 got some shrapnel wounds as well.

EDIT: Piston snuff film:

2,5, and 6:

2 and edge of 5 closeup:

Rob,

I think those beat up pistons would be best served as target practice for the drill press so i can hone my blind hole drilling technique!

They already look like they've served for target practice. I'll give you a few next time the crew is together.
