Default Please help N Texas! Tech Secession?

It was nice meeting everyone that attended the breakfast meeting at Southern Recipes Grill. Here's the story for the rest of you. I recently bought a 1986 1/2 from my parents neighbors. The car had not run in 4 years. Since then I have drained the gas, replaced the battery, spark plugs, and ignition wires. The beast now runs, but smokes pretty bad. I have not run it for more than a few minutes at a time, and the engine temp seems to do fine but the cat heats up to the point where smoke and a significant amount of heat come up through the center console. If anyone is interested in helping me out with a tech secession let me know, along with your beer or liquor preferences. Food would also be provided. I was thinking pizza, but let me know if you would prefer burgers and brats. I'm considering June 20 for the date but wanted to see what would work for yall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

June 20 would be a great time to have a tech session in Granbury. Burgers and Brats would be my preference but lets see how many other lost souls we can get to join in the fun! Make sure that you have the battery charged up and can keep the charger on it whilst the tinkerers are tinkering. You are probably getting heat and smoke from the center console cause your MMs are bad.

Only one side of the ignition is working, while the other side spews raw fuel straight through to the cats. Pull the plugs after a short run and find four of them are wet with gas. Then make sure the coil wires are both seated well in the coils and caps. Verify that the rotor and cap are good, too. It's probably a good idea to just renew those parts as part of a prophylactic timing belt replacement process. The caps and rotors will be off for that, and the ignition wiring harness will be loose across the front of the motor. You'll want to get that done before you start it many time-- one good backfire while cranking/starting will toss an old belt, especially if the tensioner is dry of oil. And while the plugs are out for the gas check, ground the coil wires and do a quickie compression test. You might discover why it was parked four years ago.

Good news is that you are in one of the major hotbed areas of enthusiast support.

I second Dr. Bob's notion. A new cap/rotor made my 80' [albeit 16v] run significantly smoother. Timing also becomes more of a predictable item [rather than a science project].

While you're pulling plugs, you might also want to do a compression test.

Lance if the car is running smoothly then it is firing on all of the cylinders, if your getting smoke you may need to run the car for longer than a 5 mins and possibly take it for a drive to burn out all of the crud that may gone down into the cats.

Warning while your running the car stick your head under the car and check the cats if they are glowing red then you have unburned fuel getting passed into the cats, shut the car off and let them cool as this can cause a fire, the body shutz will catch fire

Lance,
I agree with what Dr. Bob and MrMerlin are saying here. You may have one or maybe both cats heating up due to unburnt fuel. Are you getting spark to all your cylinders?
I think we'll get more folks to come down on the 20th. It'll be a nice drive to Granbury and we'll try relly hard not to get you kicked out of your housing development.

Lance,

It was good to meet you last Saturday and I'm glad you joined up here on R-list. I should be able to join the caravan to Granbury on the 20th.

Edit: I forgot to tell you that when we were on our way to John's house I forgot that you were in this giant diesel pick up and I was like who in the heck is hanging with us going all fast and stuff. Then you kept following us and I was starting to get paranoid. Then you stopped across the street and I was like WTF, did I **** off another off duty cop? I was glad that I didn't have to ask you if you liked donuts. Good story that I will tell you about June 20th.

Well Mike, Im glad to hear you can make it on the 20th, and as far as I know thats the only time I've been mistaken for a cop. I had a pretty good laugh while reading your post. The blue ford does hold its own for a 7000 lbs truck. I wouldn't worry about the neighbors too much John. Iv helped them all out with one thing or another, so i should have enough points built up to get by. Besides if i dont give them something to bitch about they wont have anything to do. Oh yeah, did I mention that Francis who lives next door is 92!

The engine seems to be running smoothly, and is very responsive to the accelerator. So as far as i can tell all cylinders are firing. I would go check and let yall know but time has been working against me lately. However, if you abruptly take your foot off the accelerator the engine will die. If you gently back off the accelerator the rpm's will bottom out, and then rev back up. It will fluctuate a few times and then even out at normal idle.

Lance,
We can put any parts you get for your car on your car, but I think for time sake we should stick with getting it drivable. If we DO find that you need a timing belt, tensioner rebuilt, water pump, motor mounts, pan gasket, cam cover gaskets, intake R & R, steering rack, etc., we can do those things, just not necessarily on this one Saturday.

John's right get the car running the way it should as best you can before throwing parts at it.
Treat this first session as a diagnostics - WTF is really wrong with it type of GTG.
