did anyone already mention an alarm system that is screwing up things? Do you have an aftermarket alarm system that has a starter lockout ability? Has someone been messing with the wiring at the relay panel?

All others have been mentioned. It it does not even try to start it's something like this or what Alan already correctly listed.
regards
Theo

Alan
Thanks for all the help mate, I will set about it with the volt meter this week. I guess if I can get it to fail and then test pin 86 on the starter relay for a live while the missus holds the key in start position.

Yes it has a clifford alarm and a seperate imobalizer. The clifford alarm although virtually antique now, Im told was the best on the market at one time and has lots of extra wiring around the fuse box. Ideally I would like to tear both the alarm and imobalizer out but I am worried this may create further problems. I will test the ignition switch and gear selector switch using Alans instructions and go from there

Smile Auto box selector inhibitor switch

After checking out the car using the info provided by Alan it looks like the gear selector inhibitor switch is causing the starting issue. Before I jack the car up and climb underneath does anyone know how it is removed and if if it is repairable ??

You can quickly check if the problem is simply an adjustment issue by holding the key in the start position while slowly moving the shift lever from park thru the range of motion. CAUTION!! If this is the problem, the car may start in gear and lurch forward or backward - hold the brake pedal firmly as you do this test.

The problem may be easier to solve - remove the spare tire and find the electrical connectors in the front corner. Carefully check and clean all of the connectors - the neutral safety switch wiring goes thru here.

The wire colors for the start switch are:
- Brown/yellow on one side going to violet/white on the other side of the connector.
- Violet on one side going to brown on the other.

Use an Ohmmeter to check for continuity from the violet to the violet/white wires while in Park and Neutral. This will test the start portion of the switch.

The switch is at the shift cable entry point on the transmission.

As you have discovered, it can be really expensive to try to train shops on the 928. I would suggest that you contact Jim Morehouse and buy the 928 tech info CD set that Jim has prepared. There is a huge amount of tech info in the set, and this will be the best money that you could spend on your 928. Jim's email address is jim928ATptd.net - change the AT to @.

Guys, got very tired of messing about with this last year and just stopped using the car. Now the weather i a little warmer I am intent on fixing it. Alan (if you are still out there), have been through your list... (starter relay - changed, starter solenoid - changed, ignition switch - changed the rotating "interface" on the back but not phyically the switch and key, trans selector switch on gearbox - changed, battery or starter terminals or ground strap (battery or engine) - checked all. Have now decided to remove the immobilizer anyone know what the thin yellow wire does that runs in the short loom up to the circular multiplug on the back of the ignition switch ?

Not sure if this will help or not, but the ground strap looked good, you were looking for the thread.

Wink

Checked the battery earth strap. the plastic has been mostly stripped away already so it looks like someone else had the same idea! Anyway the braided cable looks very clean, cant see any corrosion. Pulled the immobilizer out over the easter weekend so just need to use it now and see if the problem is still there!!

Thumbs up

Hi, it was quite easy to trace the wires back and remove the 'chopped in' alarm loom from the fuse box. Had a friend also with an S4 confirm the correct factory wiring. Can't believe I let my car gather dust in the garage for years due to the stupid antique immobiliser, good luck!
