Default Torque tube for 5-speeds

What is the difference between the 78-80 and the 80-95(as listed on 928 intl website) and where does 80 year model actually fall? I have a lower milage 80 5-speed euro parts car so I am naturally curious if they will work together...

The early 5 speeds up to 1980 have their front guide tube mount attached to the body, later versions have this same mount attached to the torque tube itself. Porsche WSM Vol II, page 39-64.

Do a visual check between the two to correctly verify what you have and if the donor TT will fit your application.

There is actually four different version of 5sp TT. If tube is from '80 MY it can be either 3rd or 4th version. Versions 1 through 3 are long tube used with G28/03. 30mm shorter version 4 is used with all other 5sp gearboxes starting with G28/05 which was first used in '80 ROW S. Though earliest '80 MY S still used G28/03.

wow something i noticed with a bare torque tube on a 5 speed.

I had always thought that area where the actual shifter is was some sort of aluminum or steel stamped box... then i come to find its FOAM! That was kinda shocking, I wonder what Porsche charges for a new one of those?
