Default Steering shaft bearing

Of all the things to break on my 9-2-8. Driving home the other day all of a sudden the steering wheel came loose. I though the nut backed off (just put a new wheel on).

Anyway the steering shaft bearing had come part. I have everything apart except the outer portion of the bearing is still in the tube, I don't see an easy way to extract it. So question is, it is possible to separate the new bearing and put the new race into the outer portion. I don't even know if the two will separate anyways.

Or, does any one know a method to extract it. The WSM of course shows a special tool.

I'm getting ready to do this did you pull the pod also. Or the other method I saw was without pulling the pod. Just curious sounds like a pain.

to fix your steering wheel shaft bearing .
Remove the steering wheel, then remove the turn signal switch and cover.
Remove the C clip and shaft spacer. If its under pressure then refit the shaft nut and grab it with some Vice grips, have a helper pull it towards the rear of the car ( this pulls the shaft up on its spring)
With a sharp small chisle gently tap on the outer portion of the race it will crack then its a simple matter of prying out the pieces be careful not to deform the housing .
There will probably be some ***** in the bottom of the Steering column so if you want to you can remove the securing bolt (3 of them) and pull out the Housing (not too difficult, and the pod has to be out of the way for this)
Dump out the ***** and refit the housing tap the new bearing into the top of the housing and refit the collar refit the nut and grip with vice grips and pull to the back of the car then have your helper fit the C clip while the shaft is pulled against the spring.
Refit all other pieces as they were removed
