Default TEMPERATURE GAUGE FLUCTUATIONS

Hi!

The background: 1995 928 GTS, THE belt replaced 2006 at 92000 mls, now at 116000. water pump not replaced (all done by mechanic). Ever since, once reached normal operating temp., the temperature gauge would sit solidly on the last white marker just before the red zone (never over or under). Last week the alarm/immobilizer caused a problem so I had to flat-bed it to the Porsche dealer. They fixed the alarm and replaced the battery (2 bad cells but replaced under warranty). Since then the temperature gauge behaviour has completely changed: after 10 miles it stabilizes at 80 degrees but ocasionally going below and finally after 20 miles it will reach the last white marker (90 degrees?) but fluctuates up and down (not into the red zone yet!) - the coolant seems ok and as far as I can tell the fans are running ok. Any thoughts? I am wondering about the thermostat.. and how deep down is it buried? Thanks for your thoughts/suggestions.

Hi,

I’m just a newbie, always learning in this wonderful forum.
One of the things I’ve learned, and if you do a search under the theme Timing Belt/Water Pump (TB/WP) you’ll see that everyone of the experts in this forum recommends that when doing the TB also do the WP, because a new TB will stress the old WP leading, sooner or later, to failure.
Wait for the expert’s comments, and you’ll see it’s their opinion.
Hope this helps.

Regards

First i would get an IR gun and verify the temps going in to the top of the radiator. ( they should be very close to the ops spec of the thermostat)
Then you could take on two things .
1, remove the and replace the coolant thermostat and the seal behind it.( in the center of the water bridge)
2 , Remove the oil cooler thermostat and spring and replace them ( these are just above the oil sender)

Thanks, guys. Will look into the thermostats. I did know about the belt/water pump needing to be replaced at the same time but the Porsche specialist did it without consultation and subsequently explained that there was no need, etc. I am hoping that the pump will last till the next belt change.
