RESOLVED – Got new 996 TT wheels, what to do with front dust cap?
I just picked up a set of new 996 TT hollow spoke wheels, and new rubber.
HOLY MEAT! They look great!
Thanks, for the discussion link on them Tony.
Does anyone know what has to be done to the front dust caps so that wheel center caps can be installed? I remember reading that some have had them machined.
What was machined, and how?
Is there any pics of a machined dust cap?
Randy at Whale Tail said he has never done it, but he thinks that a Boxster cap may work, and is going to look for a set this afternoon.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael
BTW, a big thanks to the “*** Man” for lending me his set of manhole covers to compare ride.

Mike, remove the dust cap and have 6 mm taken off with a lathe and put it back in.
It is a bitch to get off, I put a muffler clamp on it and kept working it back and forth until it came off. I still have the one that fits it you can have it when we hook up again.
I would take off the wheel spacers and tuck them in a bit on the rear.
COPYCAT...LOL!!!

Michael,
All you have to do is flatten the dust cap. I just used a heavy hammer on one of my previous Sharks.
I've also removed the dust caps and used a hack saw to trim approx. 1/4" off the cap itself.
The hammer option is the easiest and fastest
Be sure to remove the wheels first

Mike,
Just epoxy or paint a Porsche crest on the grease cap ..... and 'yer good to go!
Same hollow spokers I have on the C4S - you'll like them .... so where are the RS's - on the 964?
Were the rear spacers 21 or 25mm? - cannot remember> Regardless, look a bit pushed out ...

OT: Michael, You've got a gooood taste in automobiles !
I just love the 928 (obviously) and also the Audi A8/S8.
I recently sold my 2nd A8. I got the first back in early 2004. It was a 2.8 litre (193 hp, front wheel drive). Changed that to a 2.5 litre TDI (180 hp diesel, front wheel drive) in 2006. This car was originally fitted with the S8 suspension.
You may wonder why I go for the low power versions, but with a litre of gas costing around SEK 12.00, equal to USD 1.50 (thats almost 6 dollars for a gallon), i guess You can appreciate it.
Those cars do everything so smoothly and undramatic. They just flow swiftly and quitely, but still they are extremely surefooted.

If you going to wider front track IE lower offset numbers then I would suggest to fab some front flaps,
They are really not very noticeable and dont damage any sheet metal and will keep the stones a bit farther away from chipping the doors .
I also applied 3M paint protectant film along the bottom side of the rocker panel front to back, the 6 inch seems to fit perfectly, from the top of the rocker to the bottom.
I got the flaps at PEP boys they are hard plastic I also got some stainless spring steel and bent it into a long U with a hook on one leg to capture the plastic of the flap once they are slid into place the flap is held securely. I also added some black silicone sealant and drilled one small hole for a sheet metal screw to fasten to the plastic of the rocker

Hi
I have slightly different wheels to you.Sport Classics but still 18s with a 52 offset and the same problem...
I tried flattening the cap didn't work...
I found the answer though...
I fitted 5 mm spacers from a GT3 and it worked perfectly...my centre caps now fit and the front end handling has improved drastically
All the best Brett

this is a 2 part problem... the dust cap and the center cap fixing either one will do
I had this problem on my 88 w/10 spoke wheels... I fixed it by putting GTS center caps on, the concave is outward vs inward on the stock caps, they fit perfect with no alterations/modifications necessary... ie NO HAMMERING OR CUTTING

The only thing that sucks about the 996 wheels is the 50 offset front. They actually stick out past the front fender a bit with a 225 tire. Ride height on the front must be > 160 mm on the front in order to keep them from rubbing on hard corners. They also tramline a bit (catch grooves in the road and pull) and the steering doesn't return to center as nice on slow speed turns.
But they look awesome!

I do with they came in ET60 though. My car wanders all over our crappy MI roads.

The 18 x 11 et 45's fit the rear like a glove with no spacers.

They do stick out a little with 235s in the front, but who cares? They look great!
(I don't have your answer, sorry, but these covers came with these twists we got, and they do fit. Kevin might be able to give more info when he gets home later...)
