Default Smoke from Engine

I checked my oil today after changing my spark plugs and air filter and I noticed that it was 2 litres low. So I added oil until the appropriate level on the dip stick then started the car. I noticed slight smoke coming out from below the spider (dont know what that area is called). Not sure if there's a breather coming out there. But it seems to be slightly oily. I did not spill any oil...that I am sure of. I also noticed that when I first bought the car. Anyone know what that could be ? The engine also makes a whistle like noise from the engine compartment a few minutes after starting. If you rev. it up to 1100 rpm or above the noise goes away. Drop it down and it reappears...HELP...

By spider I take it you have an early car. How about putting MY in your sig? I'm not familiar with same, but it sounds (whistle) like a breather and/or vacuum line is the fault or part of it. 2 litre is a lot, but you don't say how long it took for that amount to disappear? You might find some oil collecting in the valley from a loose vacuum. I assume your coolant is not milky?

Make sure to post the year of your car, but my first guess would be a leak where the air/oil seperator (the can thing where you add oil) is not correctly sealed to the block and is leaking down into the valley (between the heads, under the spider). Mine did that when I first got it. Removed the seperator, cleaned and sealed with black RTV and it's been leak free ever since.

The whistle could also be a broken or missing vacuum hose.

Thanks for the info guys...its a 1981 Euro 928 S. And thats exactly where it is ... the valley. There is somewhat of a small puddle of oil there. Does that mean the sound is coming from the air/oil seperator or from the breather that is right behind or below. Shoud the seperator have a filter or something inside or simply empty. When I filled oil yesterday I openned the cover and it looked like there should be something in there...but then again its my first 928 and dont know much about them. Still in the learning process.

Are you sure the oil level was 2 Liters low, or is it possible that your dipstick does not go all the way in?

I'm wondering, if you over-filled the engine and are getting oil because of that.

There should be a basket/filter looking thing in the oil can.

The sound could be coming from the separator but I'd check all of the hoses in that area as well. Even if it's not overfilled the crank flings oil up into the separator and it can leak out, I know mine used to leak from where it mounted and also from the lid. The joke was that that's where I carried my spare oil because there was always a fair amount in the valley.

You've got problem.

The valley tends to collect oil over time. A small puddle doesn't surprise or alarm me.

How mechanically inclined are you? I suggest pulling the spider body and replacing the vacuum lines. Could also be the vent line from the oil filler to the manifold. Or something related to the deceleration valve. That's a vacuum can on the right side of the throttle body.

Not a hard job nor expensive. Get 8 gaskets for the intake "legs" in advance. Then you can probably/likely/hopefully find the right hoses at an auto parts store. Your Porsche has metric lines, of course, and most places have just US versions. If you can find metric sizes then get US hose that will fit a bit snugly. Yes, you could spend $100+ on a fancy silicone hose kit but that'd be $100 you could spend on dinner.

I think thats exactly what i will do...replace all the lines . really havent had a chance to drive it. The AT broke down when we were test driving the car and even though I bought it. Sat 10 days in the shop until the transmission was overhauled and now beginning to work on it mechanically. So hopefully this'll be a simple thing (keeping my fingers crossed). I'm taking it in for a timing belt change tommorrow so I 'll look around the engine and try and see what the problem is...One thing I did notice today when driving was the car doesnt have much power...could that be from sitiing around for 2 years and driven just once a month...injectors may be screwed, fuel filter or a combination of other stuff ? I just changed the plugs and air filter yesterday...
