If you do things to the 85-86 32v to match up to the Euro S power..what if you do things to the Euro S... There is always a one up theory at play.

A 310HP Euro S with larger TB, ported heads, headers and free flow exhuast will match a chipped 85 with degreed cams and headers. Add the 5.0L bottom to teh Euro S and the contest is over. And don't even mention bigger cams... But you do have to be a gear head with decent wrenching skills.

Porken, you are right as usual...

Ken that is a very nice 80 you have. Would not want your Q-tip bill, though..

I think the main point is that a 32-valve engine is much easier to add power to. Most of the kits out there are for the later engines. If you are going to tear down the engine and replace it with a 5.0 liter bottom end, you may as well get a 5.0 to begin with, no? Also, most of these hybrid 5.0 bottom w/ Euro top end motors put down around 290 - 300rwhp with exhaust mods. That really is not a lot for all that effort IMO, especially if a strong S4 with X-pipe and exhaust will do the same. Porken gets over 300rwhp on his S3 with simple tweaks that can be done in a couple of hours as opposed to removing and tearing the engine down completely. I tend to try to avoid large projects on a car that is my daily driver

Another potential drawback to a Euro in some states is the hassle of registering one with the non-standard WP0ZZZ VIN. 10 years ago I had the option of getting an '84 EuroS or an '86 US 32-valve. I ended up with the '86 and believe it was the better choice for me. When I really looked at them both objectively, I could not justify the higher price and potential hassle of the EuroS over the US '86 just for 22 peak hp at the cost of 7lb.ft torque (with a much higher torque peak than 2,700RPM of the US) and just a mere 43lbs lighter. Also a daily driver will greatly benefit from the US's 2.2 rear pinion. 25mpg on the highway for a 5-speed early 32-valve. The EuroS with the 2.7x will be 15-20% worse.

The 'S' came out in Europe in '80 using K-jetronic on the 4.7L with 300hp. In '84 the LH variant of the 4.7L 16V was released, commonly called the 'S2'.

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a cheap '80 928S 5-speed that was up for sale last year. Waiting for the new owner to discover its too expensive to maintain and put it up fo sale again >
