928 Alternator. conversion
I have a 1980 928S Euro with a bad alternator. Has anyone got replaced the early style alternator with one from a later model. If I made this change would I still have to have the air vent system like the one on my 80, Toofer

I put on a Delco style last week. All you need it the alternator and a pigtail connector (search this forum for the word "Painless" - that's the brand name of the connector). I can now use my headlights again.

Later serpentine models do have the plastic housing on the back to force air in. I think you would just need to change the pulley (easy to do with an impact gun).
I'm also a fan of the Delco CS-130 alternator though. I've converted my car, and just did another local guy's car this past weekend. They are $120 including the core charge and are 105 amp.

Also recommending the Delco is a great alternative for replacing a bad early alternator. It was sound advice given. Again something someone with 90 post to their name might not have thought about.
Even a stock rebuild kit would have been an easier option to replacing the early alternator with a later year model..unless you wanted more output as well, which brings you back to the Delco and Larger rebuild kits.
The later alternator is designed for a different turn ratio than the early models. Just changing the pully from the ribbed belt to a V-belt will under drive the alternator putting out less power.
Sorry but your statement was bad form and disrespectful to those trying to help out.

Read from post #15 onwards in this thread.
I did exactly what you are asking about - installed a '82 -'84 alternator, reference as a AL325 alternator. I had to buy the matching rear plastic duct from one of our suppliers .... but it fit the wiring harness OK, and with a modern regulator, does ~14.5V. I did not have to pull the pod to change the resistor to promote " self-excitation" ( yeah, that's an alternator term ) - works great.

Toofer, sorry for a short answer but the Paris Rome alternator is crap, Bosch is crap. Even if you have a Bosch just laying around its not worth the effort to bolt in.
