Looking at all of the pictures above I realize something. The 928 Design was way advanced and completely unique. Nothing in the era it was produced came close to its appearance. Today's cars all follow very similar styling trends and very very few cars break this mold. In fact Lamborghini is probably the only one that immediately comes to mind as different. Unfortunate that a design team can't come up with something really different and beautiful.

I agree with your conclusion. But, not your logic.
Since the mid-2000s European regulations have demanded increased protection for pedestrians that are hit by cars. ALL European cars released since those regulations went into effect that also have front engines have a huge, high snout to provide crumple space for pedestrians. Take a look at all the Mercs, BWMs, Audis, that have front engines. The only cars that have low noses from Europe have mid or rear engines. The possible exceptions are cars with long hoods with the front engine mounted far behind the front wheels in the "mid-front" layout.
The stunning red car above and the silver car (Chuck, I'd be next in line for that one) could possibly have enough "front" space with the engine mounted far in the back to provide the legally-mandated mattress for pedestrians.
Other than that, I'd bet that the real engineers that remain at Porsche could figure out a way to make the Cayenne motor a bit more svelt.

I like the design but to me the only thing that says "Porsche" is the nose. The design needs to be cleaned and rounded quite a bit. Start with getting rid of the side vents and the sharp edges at the tail.

I think Porsche needs to refine the nose of its current designs except for perhaps the 997? Personally, if Porsche does actually build another front engined sportscar I hope they deviate dramatically from the Panamera and most of their recent design cues. I've seen the Panamera in person and unless it grows on me I'm not feelin it! Further, why does every model have to look the same? Give it some individual style like back in the day.......

I think the red car in Ryan's post is just about the most perfect blend of past/present, Porsche/Jaguar (ok, flame suit on
) I could imagine. The entire front end from the firewall forward has - to me - a real Porsche feeling, while that curvy beltline is just amazing. Very E-type (which is about, in its earliest incarnations, one of the most beautiful cars ever built). I'm no doubt showing my age, so that will be a demographic of little appeal to Porsche's marketers, but damn, what a concept. End o' rant.

As I said, I like the design a lot, but it doesn't say "Porsche". Way too many sharp edges. And the superfluous trim reduces the "sleek" in the overall design.
On another note, the Panamera is both round and sleek, just not very good looking

The 928 was a very smooth design. Not many right angles or sharp lines. No vents in the front fenders. (gaawd i hate that on todays cars

I like it though...nicest look so far.
i ran it through PS for a look Id prefer...subtle but, front facia not as busy, shorter tail lights...longer rear quarter glass...no lines on the side of the car or vents behind the front arches.

Just because it says "Porsche" doesn't mean I like it, or that it couldn't use a redesign.
And new designs are good. But from a branding point of view, it needs to say "Porsche". If you look at all the years of Porsche design you will see some common traits: round, sleek. Except for the 914 and 924, and as it turns out those weren't really designs meant to be sold as Porsches. Even the 928 has a lot of "round" to it, and it is very sleek.
