Is this supposed to be here?
MY81. While changing the air filter I noticed this vacuum line hanging down and not attached to anything. It has some kind of metal plug or device in it near the end. It seems obvious that the hose should be connected to the lower air cleaner section but should that thing be in there and if so what is it for? Is this just some PO quick fix for something? 
The hose will only go on the air cleaner nipplie a very short way due to where the "plug" is...not enough to get a hose clamp on it. Any ideas...

that thing in the hose looks like a one way valve, the hose goes to the EGR system.
If you dont have the EGR hooked up then plug the hole in the aircleaner as it will be sucking in unfiltered air

When you change that old dry rotted hose - you can cut the EGR filter and re-install. I have simply used large mesh bronze for years.
First and foremost.... those appear to be original hoses - very scary
I would suggest you remove and replace every single hose in that engine compartment!
The main fuel hoses are removed by cutting the crimps with a dremel tool and replacing the hose with appropriate 5/16 EFI hose available from most auto parts supply houses for around $3.50 a ft. - You should also replace the fuel hoses at the tank - I believe it's 3/8 EFI - (not their "common" fuel hose - make sure the hose is rated for fuel injection) - use the quality clamps available at most marine supply stores for $1.00 - not the cheap "perforated" ones.
Take a little bit off the end from your different sized vacuum hoses - re-install - then head out and buy 10 ft of each - @ .50 a ft you don't mind having a little extra around....
Now head home and do each one individually....
If you aren't pulling the intake - I suggest a real long double jointed needle nose pliers - they cost about $35 and are worth every penny! After a few of these cars - pulling the intake and resealing becomes second nature.
For less then $75 you can remove and replace every fuel and vacuum hose on the car and still have some coin left over for a

Huge safety concern as engine fires are caused by old fuel hoses....
There are "kits" available with detailed instructions if your a little apprehensive about taking this on... or just post and ask....
But please be changing those lines!!!

I'm with you Firemed. The hoses are on my to do list before I use the car this summer. Can you recommend a good write up on removing the intake? Looks like it would be a lot easier to change out the hoses with that out of the way.
MrMerlin, I do believe the hose is hooked to the EGR on the other end. The car was running great before I found this. How do I tell if the EGR is hooked up and/or working and if it is, should I remove the valve/plug and hook it back to the air cleaner?

EGR is on '78-'79 US, only.
That's the overflow/intake for the gas vapor recovery system. It goes to the carbon cannister above the passenger side front wheel. The plug is not factory.

Back when I was growing up -
We used to chisel images in stone!
One of the best things going these days is the digital camera....
Lots and lots of pictures! Take a bolt loose - take a picture....
It isn't hard at all - if you need extra pictures I'm sure we can provide a few
