Default New Paint

Good afternoon

I am going to need new paint on my 1981 S. A spray shop local to me has quoted GBP2.5K with rubber removal and replace. This is for an Audi Lava grey Pearl colour.

The price seems okay, but not sure on the end result, any ideas on a good place to go for this and what the right price is. New window rubbers really should be changed at the same time. I am in Devon, but happy to travel anywhere in Southern UK.

At the same time I would remove the rear rubber spoiler and associated pieces that run up the side of the tailgate. I like the simple look of the S4 spolier, I take it that it will not cause me problems when I do this?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Paul,
You may have some body work to be done when the rear spoiler comes off. Most have rust under. As far as price...I assume that does not include the cost of new rubber. If the place does good work it may be a good deal. Here in the states you don't always get what you pay for but you sure pay for what you get. Go for it!!! Pics please later on.

Thanks Dean, and no it does not include the rubber, i'll look up price in good time. Just pricing at the moment but will be done this year as paint work starting to lift.

His work looks good, not sure if it lasts good though... anyone with previous experience on a 928 would be a great plus.

And the pics will be a must.... i will need the oohs and ahhs to make up for the bank balance

The body work Dean refers to will be holes that will need to be filled up on removing the S spoiler . As with anything like this, get a reference from somebody who has experienced work from this painter. As a guide, when I had mine stripped back and repainted, they removed and replaced :-
the rear quarter glasses and trims and rubbers,
windscreen top trims (one needed replacement due to kinking on removal),
door mirrors (requiring some fixing to the rewiring job later), to allow proper prep and paint of doors and mirrors
sunroof panel,
front and rear bumpers were being changed anyway, but best result is NOT having to try to mask the black trim here,
rear spoiler

If you are changing colour, consider the difficult of doing the door jambs properly....Mine didnt change, but the painter removed the sill plates, door strikers etc, and touched up the jambs.

I'm getting ready to have my Black 84 Euro repainted. I'm going with the Pearl Coat Black as on my wife's 2009 Dodge Charger.

The shop noted my window moldings are in good shape and the rear S spoiler as well. They recommended taping them off as removal may damage them.

They had another 928 there and I noticed some marks on the window trim where the sander hit it. So, I'm concerned about that and will probably have some window trim removed and reinstalled.

As far as the S spoiler goes, the other 928 had the S spoiler on it and they just taped it off, it looked fine. After reading this post though, I wonder if I should have them take it off to check for rust under there. I have noticed leaves and the maple seeds that act like helicopters get stuck in there. I want to put the S spoiler back on though. So, should I or shouldn't I?

Has anyone had their S rear deck spoiler painted or Dyed? It's not as black as it should be. Since it's soft rubber though, I assume if it's painted and someone pushes down on it while closing the hatch, it would crack after awhile? Any options to make it look new? I use Back to Black, but you have to keep doing.

The car has 62k miles, I just bought it in January. Previous owner had it about 17 years.

They are going to remove the Mirrors, Door handles, locks, front nose piece, rear tail piece, and side markers. I'm having the body side molding removed and Left Off.

I've eMailed Strosek twice looking for quote on their Hood Inlet and Outlet vents, no response so far. I'd like to do something other than just a repaint to set it off. I considered the fiberglass GTS style rear fender flares, but was told the body shop couldn't guarantee the body work as the sun would cause the fiberglass and metal to shrink/contract at different rates and would likely start to crack after time.

Previous owner painted the front S chin spoiler, the shop recommended a satin black to repaint it, then I could touch it up with spray paint myself.

I would like to replace the S spoiler at the back along with the trims around the hatch, they do seem to act as rubbish collectors. I have the same problem with the colouring, again using Back to Black, it does not last too long though. I would also like to change the front spoiler, I do not have knowledge of an easyish swap over though. Its not the shape I am against, I would just like to end up with the car having the minimum of black plastic/rubber on it - toward the S4 look.

I have also thought about painting or dying but came to a similar conclusion, not sure what to do with the mirrors as they look so sad and tired hanging out there in the wind. Again it would be nice to remove the black trim and just have them body colour.

I will go to the S4 spoiler to replace the removed S spoiler for the rear. I am also changing the wheels, probably to the Cup 1 style. I have refinished my wheels twice now, but the lacquer keeps coming off and they are a pain to keep clean.

I am hopeful that I will get a recommendation for a reliable spray shop, last thing I want is the paint peeling off a year down the line.

Thanks for the tips so far.

There is a guy close to me that specialises in classic and unusual cars. I called in about doing some work on my Mercedes, and I was very impressed.
He isn't the cheapest mind you, but his other work looks amazing. He only rarely uses plastic filler, most of the stuff he does is with lead! I lost my job the week after I visited him, otherwise i'd have had him do the work. I'm hoping to let him do some stuff to my 928 when i'm back in work.

Hi Ben
It looks like an interesting place, I will call them to see if they have previously worked on 928s. Good luck with the job hunting.

I asked Paul Anderson about this.... He told me the front wings/fenders are also needed.

Cheers

I will apologise for the post above as now - slap - I have since performed a search and there are plenty of threads on the front spoiler. I will probably end up removing it.
