Default timing pointer?

There's a red pointer screwed to the old (OEM) WP which is also on the new Laso pump.

With the centre tbelt cover in place this pointer is not visible so why is it there?

Timing the engine without the covers on?

TIA

this helps to set the timing prior to cover installation/.
Also setting the damper at 45 deg for belt removal

Thats what I thought so other than a few grams of weights savings I'll leave it in place.

Thx Stan
