Default Manual trans parts interchangeability early to late

Got a G28-11 trans out of a 85 that has shed a tooth or two on the layshaft. It is 2nd gear and requires the complete layshaft itself to be replaced. Looking at parts diagrams it shows that the early boxes use a different part number layshaft but it sure looks similar. When replacing any gears they are sold as a matched set so you have to replace 1st and 2nd both on the layshaft and mainshaft in order to fix one or the other.
Question, as obviously the gears are different on the early and late boxes due to the change in syncronizers what would happen if I used a early layshaft with a later mainshaft permitting the amount of teeth are the same? I would expect some whine maybe but will it fit?
I've got a couple of early boxes to cannabilize but nobody I have found wants to part out a later G28 10 or 11 box.

It will very likely fit ok but I would expect gears to whine even if you use layshaft from another G28/11. This might be acceptable since only two lowest gears are affected.
