Default Distributor cap and spark plugs question

Hi,

I’m preparing to replace coil, distributor rotor, distributor cap, plug wires and plugs on my 83S Euro 5spd.
The distributor cap I got it's a Beru, but it's different from the original, as you can see on the pic.
Assuming it can be mounted in either of the two possible ways, this cap doesn't have the cylinder numbers printed on it.
So, what is the best way to mount it right, get also the wires right, because I know that the wires position is not indifferent?
If someone could make me something like a beginners step-by-step guide it will be much appreciated!
By the way, are these "Yttrium" spark plugs suitable for my 928?

Or the best solution is to stay with original recommended WR7DC?

Thanks in advance for your help
Regards.

Hi,

I believe that if you turn the cap over you'll find a tab around the edge that keys it into the distributor mounting.

The easiest way to get the plugs on right is not not remove the wires from the old cap until the new one is in place. Maybe one or two will have to be removed to get it out of the way enough. Find the firing order and have that handy to double-check work. That should be on the top of the radiator.

There are a lot of fancy plugs out there. Replacing with good copper plugs is all you need to do. Sure, there are platinum plugs and two-, three- and four-electrodes but your car will run prefectly well with the stock type of plug. Just ask for the stock plugs at the parts store and get the more expensive, "better" brand. Should be 2 or 3 euros each.

Hi Glen,

Thanks for your answer
In fact and looking carefully, there is a small tab in one of the interior sides of the distributor, so it can only be mounted one way.
Thanks for the tips regarding the plug wires replacement and the spark plugs. I guess I’ll stick with the original Bosch WR7DC.
Just one more question: any special tip for replacing the rotor, or it’s just a straight swap? My rotor is the one that cuts the RPM at 6500.

Thanks again

Just install the rotor making sure to match the orientation. I think it's keyed as well.

I've got the same rotor. That's a fun part because you can adjust the RPMs it cuts out at with just a pair of pliers. It it's too high or two low, bend the post the spring is attached to. Tighter is a higher RPM cut-off.

At one time I had the US rotor and the RPMs were unlimited. These cars make a very cool sound at 7200 RPMs. But... might have contributed to other problems.

I can imagine the sound at 7.200...
I guess that for now I'll stick with the 6.500, it's more than enough to put my heart beating faster and a biiiig smile on my face
The more I know and drive my 928, the more I'm convinced these cars are amazing and very very under estimate!
Well, better for us...

Thanks again

That cool sound at 7200rpms could be valve float...
