928's, I am done!
I am getting that sinking feeling again.
Make your car 100% and start from there, that is a pretty big order, on even a ten thousand mile, $40,000 dollar GTS.
On a low dollar car, you can count on motor mounts, torque tube, better clamps, fuel lines (to be fair, any 928 needs all the lines fuel or not replaced ever ten years or less), while you have the torque tube out, you need to rebuild the axles, reseal the trans, put in new foam on the TT, brakes are worn also, might as well do them while you are there.
Who knows what else
When does it ever stop, jet hot coating makes your exhaust look better than new, powder coat the intake and cam covers, but you are going to need new hoses ($1,000) a new TPS, IAC knock sensors, rev sensors, cam sensors.
Replacing all the suspension parts makes you car handle better, and it will handle better after you put on $$ high dollar springs, shocks and god knows what else.
Don't like the look, well GTS mirrors, rear quarters, remove the rub strips, then just go ahead and put a ten grand paint job on it.
Take it for a drive, loving it, but it gets dark and the US specs headlamps are not good enough, need to find out how much the Euro versions are, damn, this car is starting to get to be money, just before you get to the place you are going, 300 miles away from home, you lose the 2/6 rod bearings, now you are at a cross road, do you go forward?
Ok, we can fix that, it is just money,
Baby needs a new pair of shoes, 275's or bigger, You can find good looking wheels, but they are the wrong offset, looks like another 4-6 grand for wheels and tires.
Ok, got the motor apart, machine shop guys say 500 bucks to do every thing, bill is 985 and it looks like the rod clearance may be a bit tight, well we may not be putting a motor together any time soon.
Friends come by the shop and say, "That was a nice car, You took me for a ride and then you took it apart, will it ever run again?"
You only wound one, the other is quick and very close to the door.
In closing, I would like for all you 928 lovers, especially the 928 polishers and modifiers, and picture posting bastards that do not put cleavage in your pics, I will be out in about a year and a half, I know where most of you ****'s live.
I know that few here know me, this post is half way a joke, and the other half is on all of us, so you folks just jump in and tell me why the 928 is a great car, BUT, it can catch on fire, really who other than Louie knew freon woudl burn?
They bend valves at 40,000 miles, lose bearings, crack dashes, and make smart men spend 40 grand on a five grand car.
some really smart guys have spent more than that, they now have a car they can trade even for a used Jetta.
Because it is the best long distance GT car that has ever been made IMHO, and I love mine, and this post is a joke that comes close to the truth.
PS, I never got a shot off at the smart assed who made the comment about mine being done .

I would put cleavage in every single pic if I could, but she might scratch the paint.

It sounds like a true love/hate relationship to me. The make-up sex is the best. Give her all you got with no respect! She'll love you for it.

I'm dying!Great post.
I am right there with you sometimes - right up until that part where I fire up that engine, ease it out of the driveway, and hit the go pedal with nothing but smooth twisties ahead of me! Put her back together and go

You need to drive as much as possible, and don't go too mod-crazy. A 100% functional 928 is a great car that gives you a lot of driving enjoyment. Just don't make a habit of driving too many nice newer cars or you may want more from the 928...
The best is just appreciating it for what it is, and log some miles.

I'll be sure to post some pics later, not sure about showing off my dogs cleavage but if you absolutely need to see it I may be able to convince her with a belly rub...
I fired the GT up last night for the first time and she turned right over. After putting the code into the radio I settled into the seat and took in all the beauty. As I sat there I realized just how well Porsche designed the interior. The steering and shifter were exactly within reach with the right height and distance. My body felt comfortable in the seat. They did everything right to make sure the driver could fully enjoy the driving experience.
Once the car was warmed up I pushed the go pedal and the engine rumbled without hesitation. Just sitting there made me feel like a kid that just walked into the biggest toy store in the world with tons of money in his pocket to buy whatever he wanted. I'm sure you've all been there before.
I can't wait to get her on the road again and enjoy the effortless torque and steering.
Bone stock these cars are amazing as others have already stated. Buy a nice 928 and treat her well, you won't be disappointed.

Insert just about any "sports car" and it's the same story, except most other fixer upper fanatics don't actually drive their fixed up cars like most 928 owners.

Greg, you've made a bad assumption that skews the rest of your thinking. Rather than thinking of it as a $5k car, consider it as a $80k car that's suffered a little from its age. You were able to buy it well, and now there's a little investing to do to bring it back to its former glory.
I've come to a point where I realize that there's at least $5k needed to bring an older low-mileage car to reliable driving status, just in rubber bits and known replacement items like shocks tires brakes. Anything that's actually broken gets added on top of that. Whatever I see wrong x3 or more when estimating, for that hidden WYAIT stuff. That factor goes up as mileage and apparent condition are considered. The current market for the cars used already reflects the need for deferred maintenance on almost anything in a car you might look at. Almost every car you look at is a project at some level. We foolishly bash owners who list cars at a price that reflects some of the work done from the minimum $5k list.
I was very fortunate to find a low-miles, dealer-maintained car when I took over mine almost a dozen years ago. Only a few things have "broken" or needed service beyond maintenance. Wear items are replaced before they wear out, and I'm the king of WYAIT because I hate to do the same work twice. I hope to be the best PO in the world someday. In the meanwhile, it's an ongoing task to keep the car in top condition. After all, it is an $80k ride.

Fun but true post. I feel your pain and joy. I have learned so much about cars in the past 7 years of ownership that atleast I have transferred those skills to help other people and fix my other vehicles which has saved me $$$ which I would have never been able to do before. Also, it helped me become a more confident in buying a new Jeep last year amongst other things. Finally, I have met many great people online and locally of which wouldn't of happened either...so that's my silver lining...
I've been known to tell others that it's on On Job Technical training! ;~)

Race Car
I just drove my car to work today after it was down for 6 days for water pump/timing belt/porkensioner/all front oil seals/cam timing/valve cover gaskets/hall sensor/some coolant hoses and reservoir. I friking love the car and would never sell. Besides, the bill was only ~$700 for the parts and fluids, half of which are good for at least 10 years.
I think people get all twisted up because they love their 928 and want the car to be *absolutely* perfect in every way. This is an almost impossible goal to achieve. I remember years back when I bought my first Porsche, a 4 year old iris blue 968 6-speed. Man that was an immaculate car. As I was test-driving it with the owner, I mistakedly hit a tiny puddle and he was visibly shaken, then just said he would clean and wipe the car later. I was like,
I say just see the car for what it is and use it for what it was made for. Jet-hot coating on the exhaust? Who cares; does it really help when I'm inside driving it? All I really want from my 928 is for it to look nice and drive well and have everything work. I've been happy with these cars this way for 10 years now.
