Default Speedo Fixed!

I feel like a million bucks today! My speedometer is fixed!

A big thanks to Dwayne for his Pod Removal and Instrument Cluster Repair instructions and everyone else for their advice.

The first thing I did as soon as I had the instrument cluster out was to measure the resistance from the bottom pins of the Hard PCB (opposite long pins interface with Speedometer) to the termination / harness connector points on the Flex PCB. The rivet at the red probe (pic) was open to the trace. All other measurements were 0 ohms to their respective termination points. So, I knew immediately where the problem was. Since the only problem I had was the speedometer, I only removed half of the Flex (just enough to get under the speedo) which saved some time and work. I soldered the open rivet, and the other rivets for good measure. Cleaned up all the connector contacts and put it back together. The speedometer came up immediately, and now the up shift light (all 5 speeds have this?) works also.

The pod removal isn't too bad, but getting the pod back in it's place and getting everything lined up is a pain. This job would be a bit easier with another person to help out.

Can I solder the rivets without removing any of the flex?

Yes Landseer, you can. But it's imperative to use a Multimeter to determine if there is an open rivet (infinite resistance) to the termination points. The circuit traces are easily visible from the rivets and you can see and measure at the termination point.

If you look at the picture above, the pins (marked with a Sharpie) are connected to the Flex circuit via a Hard PCB at the rivets. The opposite side of short pins you see are longer and plug in to the back of the speedometer. If your resistance measurements are all OK (0 ohms) from the pins to all the termination points, you could have some corrosion on the pins that plug in to the back of the speedometer, which would require you to remove / pull up at least half of the Flex to clean the pins.

I think it's a good idea to pull up at least half of the Flex to be able to solder the rivets on the Hard PCB also (which you can't see in the picture, it's on the opposite side of the Flex) and clean the longer end of the pins that insert into the speedometer.

If you have the same problem as me (the lone rivet on the right), it would be possible to fix without pulling up any of the Flex. You can carefully scrape off some of the Flex's masking next to the rivet to reveal more area to solder to on the trace. Obviously, you need to measure the resistance after soldering to confirm that you fixed the problem.

It's a wonderful feeling to have this fixed! Plan on several hours to remove, fix and re-install.
