Porsche 928 vs Ferrari 308/328 ?

I love the 308s, but after eves-dropping the Ferrari BBs, the facts about refreshing one of those GTs is not encouraging.
1) The obligatory, engine-out refresh cost over $15k. DIYers save a bit, but parts cost exceeds labor.
2) A "no rust" declaration means that the Fiat sheet metal hasn't transfered the rust from the inside to the outside.
3) Age has not been kind to the sodium filled exhaust valves. Nothing wrong with the technology, but the tendency for aging exhaust valve stems to snap and cause stratospherically expensive repairs is too common. Some owners have complained of engine damage, just weeks after the scheduled $15k engine refresh.
5) There is a palpable amount of ferrari BB hand-wringing over expenses incurred just months after spending > $10k in maintenance.
4) Add a quart every 300 miles on average. I drove my 928 from San Francisco to Maryland without needing to top off once. I like the idea of a daily driver GT.
In short, maintaining our P-cars is chump-change by comparison. I have yet to loose a single night's sleep over my P-car. There is a Ferrari in my dreams, but its not made of old Soviet block sheet metal and replacement parts aren't gold plated.

There's a good thread on this topic running right now in the 993 sub forum, with an excellent post by a member who has extensive experience with both marques. I'll try to cross post it here, but I am not getting complete url's on the tops of my pages, so I'm not sure if it'll work:

Nope; it didn't work, but the thread is called "A near disaster, almost bought a Ferrari." See post 34, which is a real eye opener.

I was never tempted by the Ferrari world. The only thing I seriously pondered when picking out my 928 was a well preserved Acura NSX which looks and handles a lot like some of the F cars, but made by the Japanese instead of the Italians... Then I found out what the peak torque on the NSX motor was and I had to move on.
Now what if you stroked the NSX's 3 liter V6 to around 4.5 liters....

Dave C,
I like your last comment, "those that understand 928's are fanatics." Thanks for the link; I've never seen that article.
Count me as a fanatic.

Well, truthfully....you could likely come out OK with buying a 308 with a blown engine for under $10k and sticking something else drivetrain in it. That's interesting. How about a turbo Alfa Romeo 2.5L 6 cyl ? That's close enough isn't it? When the babe asks "Is it a real Ferrari?", you can say "Yeah, babe. But this one has an Alfa Romeo engine!" She'll say "Ooooh, Does it really?!" And then you can say.....
