Now I'm stumped.

Just a completely off the wall question for those that have experienced it. Is it possible that a defective ignition switch (electrical portion) could be causing this issue?
No - I don't think so - at least not as described so far.

Okay, I checkd the alternators again and they were the same as my last post, so they are good.

So last night I start checking and rechecking everything. Everything stayed the same except when I ground the exciter the low charge lamp DOES NOT come on. I tried several different known grounds and nothing. The wire is still receiving voltage with the ignition in the on position just no charge lamp when grounded. I am digging into the pod and will figure this out. Going to install new bulb and resistor. Will report back.

Pulled the pod and tested the resistor and found that it was at 77 ohms. I really can't tell what bulb is the low charge lamp? I pulled the bulbs and cleaned all the contacts, I am ordering all new bulbs and replace all of them as well as the resistor. I will be using deoxit to clean all the contacts as well and it will keep them corrosion free as well. I am clean all grounds as well.

I am assuming the low charge light has to be one of the nineteen instrument bulbs in the black holders but I don't have a snake light and I am not see where one of these is it. Help is appreciated.

This is a digidash so a little different (courtesy of Ed Scherer I think).

However the charge lamp is in basically the same place.

Sweet thanks Alan.

I am cursed. I now need a clear lens for my cluster! I love my children, my son knocked it off the bench and broke the lens. If I can't find one I know a acrylic fabricator that might be able to work up something to fit.

I have cleaned all of the grounds minus the two that are on top of the bell housing as I cannot reach them without taking the exhaust off. I plan on doing the motor mounts, oil pan gasket, and TT bearings this winter and will get them then. I ended up replace the main engine ground that goes to the frame on the passenger side with some heavy 1/0 gauge welding wire. I also replace the original negative battery terminal strap as well as it was showing its age.

I have ordered new bulbs and lens for the cluster and should have the bulbs here soon. After they get here I will coonect everything up and pray!

Two on top of bell housing handle all the engine electronics.
They're unfortunately the ones that might matter.
Access from top, though its a bit of a hassle on S4.

Landseer thank you and I think I will be able to get to those over the weekend.

Update - I tore my intrument cluster completely apart to make sure i got all the bulbs. There are four additional bulbs in MY87-88 clusters that sit behind both end gauges. Behind these guages there are four additional bulbs that have legs similar to an LED and sit within black housings. Similar to Steve's picture above. They are low voltage, low oil pressure, low fuel, and high coolant temp warning lights. They are expensive because according to Roger they can only be had from Porsche.

Another week or so before I get everything buttoned up and ready to go to see if this solves the alternator issue. The low voltage light was not burnt out, it is working when tested with a 12V source straight to the bulb itelf and in the socket itself. I tested the resistor and it was reading high at 77 ohms. Eliminating things one by one.
