antilock light comes on

antilock light comes on
Can someone tell me what be causing the exclamation light to activate located near the A/C switch everytime I take off in the car?, and when it does it also activates the antilock sign in the the dash above the oil guage on the right side of the dash pod. For my 86 928
Thanks Tony H.

I meant to (say what may be causing it),( not what be causing) and also it only does it after or each time I have started the car.
Once the car is running the light or exclamation mark stays off when I push it in, but if I shut the car off and then start it back up and take off it will do it again.
Thanks Tony H.

The light on the dash pod stays on always once the exclamation mark activates it never goes out like the exclamation light does. I always says antilock lit up. I really don't think it is suppose to do that.

If it doesn't come on until the car has moved a few feet, then it is mechanical and you'd need to pull your wheels and inspect the ABS equipment at each corner.
If it is electrical, it's easiest to start with the ABS relay in the CE panel. Disconnect the battery, pull the ABS relay, put a jumper between 30 and 87 on the socket, reconnect the battery and start the car. If the light doesn't come on, it's the relay. Clean its spades and stick it in a few times. Start the car and if the light still comes on, replace the relay.
If the light doesn't go off when you jumper 30-87, then check the relays under the hood. If not those, pull your wheels and make sure the wiring to the sensors at each wheel is good and the connections are tight.

Thanks PorKen, di you just try it or you thought it was bad,I will look for a abs relay to try and see if it will help. Hey Mason at 928 Worlwide if your out there maybe you can send me one since we still have some undone stuff to handle, I can always send it back if it don't help. Late 85 early 86 abs relay????
Thanks Tony H.

Hey Matt, if that is what you wish to be called, I only comes on after the car has started to move so with your statements I tend to lean more to the mechanical side of the issues.
The light does not come on when you start the car only when you start to move down the road. Some time the exclamation light will stay on until I push the button and then it will go out and sometimes it just flashes but in both situations the one in the dash that say antilock stays on always after they come on.
Looks like it is time to pull some wheels off and since I have no clue what to look for I am not sure what that will do for me. I will just look for loose or bad connections I guess but I don't know what connections to look for.
I am realyy new to this type of car so all is a learning thing for me.
Thanks for your reply.

Suggest you buy the workshop manual on CD from Roger Tyson at 928srus.
That will explain that there are also two relays on the ABS hydraulic unit, accessable from the wheelarch once the inner cover has been removed. A problem with either of these will also cause the ABS light to come on after ignition on, but before the car has moved.
There's a 12v feed connector near the ABS unit, in the engine bay. Disconnect the battery ground strap in the trunk before investigating this connector for corrosion. It is located in a little black plastic box...

Since it appears mechanical it is probably a dirty sensor on one of the wheels. The sensor is a manget and can collect junk not allowing it to read the rotation of the wheel. I suggest cleaning all 4 corners and verifying all the connections are snug.

Tony...........you need to read and understand the owners manual. It explains the situations of the 'exclamation light' coming on and being able to switch off and it coming on and not being able to be switched off...........kinda like a level I and level II warnings.
There are 3 relays that control the ABS system but before we go there why dont you pull all 4 wheels, find the sensors, clean them while inspecting the wiring etc.

To all who have answered this thread thank you I will pull all of the wheels and inspect them I live on a dirt road so this may become a continual issue for me.
None the less it was doing it when I bought the car and yes it only comes on after the car has started to move not while sitting still so all leads me to think machanical.
I will inspect all 4 coners and see what I have to see. and check any type of electrical connection I see and I will clean off all of the dirt I may run into.
To Malcolm, I do not have an owners manual I only have the shop CD, I need to find a owners manual but until then I have to deal with a shop Cd that is or has more details than I can understand since I am not a machanic.
I am going to see if someone has a copy of my year (late 85 early 86) titled 86 manual for sale or that they can copy for me, I never have seen one but knowing Porsche it is most likely 2 or 3 hundred pages long.
It looks like my first step is to check all of my wheels and go from there. I do remember reading somewhere about this exclamation mark and it said (if I remember right) that a fatal failure has accured, but if you can push in the button and it goes out then it is just something that needs attention.
Thanks Malcolm and all others who are trying to help!!!

Malcome your avatar of Neil Young is great the guitar he is using is a Les Paul based on the head stock, I have several like it, one is a gold top the other is a tiger finish and that last is a sunburst all are great by Gibson, I really love my 6/12 Gobson double neck cherry finish and my Fender Stevie Ray #1 Strat not to mention the Marshall full stack I use to push them. How was the fishing?
I may have to wait until this weekend to look at my wheels. Time is tough when I have to work my real job.

I too like my Gibson Les Paul...........it has a tobacco sunburst top.
Fishing was good............5 rainbows in the smoker this morning.
Back on topic.............I checked the 928 SP site..........they do indeed have owners manuals for sale. If you can get a ABS relay from Mason to try make sure you get the right one; the one on the CE panel is small in footprint but quite tall.
