Default Annoying 'bell' sound and how to disconnect

86.0

I think my car was broken into and poorly repaired before I owned it because
there is a separate key for the passenger door as well as the rear hatch.

When I open either after the drivers door is closed a really sad sounding
bell goes off.. Sounds like a small motor winding up and then releasing
to hit a bell anyway. Sounds like it's coming from under the pass. dash.

How can I disconnect that 'feature'.

remove the right side console cover and check under the radio for a relay with holes on its top, pulling the relay out will shut it off

Since your in Denver are you part of the Rocky mountain sharks??

HA! Mine had that 'feature' disabled when I got it. I was in there to replace the *previously stolen* radio and noticed it sitting there not connected to anything. When I plugged it in it started up. That lasted about 10 seconds. Now it's in my glove box.

Its only supposed to chime when either door is open and the key is in the ignition (and ignition switch is in posistion 0/1) OR when either door is open and marker lights are on OR when either door is open and either side's parking lights are on.

Could any of these have been the case when testing (or a known fault in any of these - e.g. door pin switch).

Alan.

My '88 works exactly as Alan describes, except that it continues to chime for a while after engine start unless the driver's seatbelt is fastened.

Is this a feature of the same "relay"?

Well yes with the ignition on it does chime for the seatbelt too... I was focussing on the non-running mode... but your observation is correct - I should have mentioned that too (drivers side only obviously) and it has a short timer (<10 sec) before it times out.

As long as I can disconnect it I'll be happy. Mine chimes when pass and hatch open with no
key in the ignition and no lights on. After I shut the doors it goes off for 10 secs unless I lock
the drivers door with the key.

It sounds awful, so it won't be missed at all.

Sounds like it thinks the marker lights are on - probably a fault in the relay. This is one of those relays where there seem to be a lot just laying around and not many people are asking for them...

Some of them work at the right times but end up sounding a bit like a strangled cat... also annoying...

Hey,
Finally got around to pulling this relay.

It did not work.

The annoying chime is still there. If you guys were thinking that the 'chime' was coming from the relay
itself. (because it looks like it might have a built in speaker in the relay).. that's not the source. It's
coming from behind the glove box, very close to the coolant res.

Any thoughts?? I really want to kill it.

When my car's chime would not stop, I discovered that the light housing between the visors was cracked and shorting out. The short tricked the car into sensing that a door was always open. I replaced the cracked light and the chime operates normally now.

Thanks, but the chime does stop, it just sounds like hell when it's on.. I need to disable it somehow.

Perhaps an aftermarket alarm system...

On the subject of the chime relay, I was experiencing strange symptoms W/ the tachometer. It would swing wildly from 2000 rpm to 6500 rpm for no reason. I would also hear strange buzzing sounds along W/ a very slow/low volume audible bell sound. I also have the factory alarm which when disconected did not stop this. When I removed the chime relay #928.618.102.02 everthing ran fine.
You may want to remove the glove box and see if you have a factory alarm. If you remove the alarm #928.637.104.00 you will need to jumper connections 15-87a in order for the car to run.

Sounds like I need to pull the glove box and see what's in there.
