We just installed a new Laso pump and it did indeed have the added bushing.

Cheers,

John, Welcome to Rennlist. We've had our S4 forever but only a member here for a year, it's been a tremendous resource!

I am confused on the chronology. You just replaced the WP, found it belching coolant, took it apart found the "machining" job on the block?
Where did the 100 miles come in?
Was that the total miles from replacing pump to taking it apart? Did it start belching fluid right away?

It sounds like the impeller must have been loose from the beginning. Did you try twisting it on the shaft by hand?

Great idea on the web-cam by the way!

Personally I would go with Earl's fix.

Malcom, glad you have the new pump. It looks better but I would still like to see a circlip or something.

I dove the car a total of 100 Mi since the pump went in. I drove about 10 Mi since the problem started.
One concern is that I have only recovered about 1 tablespoon of aluminum filings (I have been pouring the coolant through a re-usable coffee filter) The fluid has been black and metallic so I think a lot of has been "liquified". I hope with an aggressive flush that I can get more - don't want any hot spots.

It looks like I can install a new pump and go. -
We may get 100+F once a decade up here in "The Great White North".

As a new member I am impressed with the time everyone takes to help me with this issue. Thank you!

I'll post my results.

The new style Laso pumps have the extra bush.

I studied the rebuilt Porsche pump that I have here last night and it has a bush (bright metal) between the impellar and the shaft. This may be a new modification.
Dave (worf928) did you see the bush on your Porsche pumps?

Dave,
There should be a date stamp on them as indictated by Malcolm.
You can tell by the extra bush. IIRC these started late in 2008/early 2009.

The one (new Laso) I have here on my lap is ink-dated "101207" so bet is that's December 10th, 2007. So.... I cannot compare, easily, what I have with Malcolm's picture. Below is a picture of mine. What does The Collective say? Good Laso or bAAAd Laso?

Here's a better link to the side-by-side

Interesting that my pump is a late '07 yet the 'better' pumps didn't start until late '08?

Roger,

The Porsche pump that I have in stock has a bushing on the impeller end that looks slightly larger in OD that the ones pictured. It was "remanufactured" by AUTO-PAC. The other end of the shaft, the pulley end has 928-2004 stamped in it. I have never seen a Porsche date code like that, so I assume it is aftermarket. The pulley end of the shaft is ~ .630", 16mm in diameter. The impeller end is ~ .483", 12.28mm. The bushing OD is ~ .672", 17.07mm. I received it late last summer (2008).
So, is this a "good" one?

The new Laso measures:

shaft @ pulley 14.5mm
shaft @ impeller 11.9mm
bushing OD 14.6mm

The pulley side of the new Laso:

What is that steel bar for attached to the tensioner pivot? Will that require modifications to the timing cover?
