Just disconnect the fans and drive fast!

There is nothing as simple as a relay, and a blown/open fuse would kill the fans altogether. The fans are controlled by a brain-box next to the passanger seat (under the carpet-lump), with a driver box (power transistors) just inside the front lip of the hoop, on the pass-side (the black thing with fins). They are controlled by a temperature sensor in the radiator (drivers side down low), and a pressure-switch for the air-con. Check the connections to those two sensors, and the connectors to the two boxes.

Good travels! And please post pic's of the auto-train!

Great car! I had this fan issue and it was the sending unit on top of the intake with the two wires coming from it. It looks like it is brass and screws into the intake.

Can it be cleaned or just replaced?

You could try cleaning it but will probably need replacing. Just unplug the wires when you leave the car.

My train leaves at noon so I thought I would swing by Autosportsystems in Fairfax, VA and have them recharge my freon and check the fan issue since I have no tools with me. They looked at battery that shorted and are replacing it with the right size. They determined it is the Aux. Fan Switch at the base of the radiator on drivers side (Jim nailed it earlier) that is the problem.(928 606-14900). Closest one is in NJ so I will just unplug it tonight and get a new one when I get home. I cannot say enough about ASG. I had no appt. but they took me right in and went to work.

Living in the DC area, it's always good to get feedback on 928 wrenches - good or bad. Thanks for the update, and your impression of ASG.
Have a good trip home, and enjoy your new GT!

Default Another Fla. 928

Well the car and driver made it back to West Palm Beach this week. It drove great except for the battery short on the Delaware Bridge. I stopped in Fairfax, VA at Autosportsystems Group for a charge on my freon as I knew it would be hot by the time I got to Fla. They put in the right size battery and did a quick look over and said it looked good. Ray diagnosed the radiator fan switch malfunction and I have a new one in my hands that I will put in today. ASG is a a real honest group as they just finished getting my sons 1989 928 AC working. I found them on this list and was worth the price of membership.

The car is fantastic. 42k miles and it looks 2 years old. The doors stay open and the rear hatch actually works. No rust, all components work. K40 undetectable radar and viper alarm system all work. I definitely lucked out on this one after helping my son rehabilitate his 1989.
Now the bad news. The tires look a little old with some cracking. DOT date code shows 2002 manufacture date. I may upgrade to 17s if I can find some rims at Hershey in 3 weeks.

The AC runs for about 20 minutes then stops cooling. The heater valve does close but I have disabled it by turning the vacuum control. No heat gets through as we do not need it here. I checked the connectors on the front sensor and they look ok. Maybe the unplugged radiator fan switch has something to do with it. I will put it in today and then try again. I had a similar problem on my sons 1989 and a new expansion valve seemed to do the trick. System was converted to 134a by dealer about 5 years ago.

This group has been a big help. thanks to all!!

Here are some pictures:

Looks like a beauty.

Once you sort out the A/C, Tires and a few other WYAIT items you should have a creampuff.

Niiice. That box stock state w/the original D90's (on marginal tires) bring back some memories, all the way down to the missing jumper post cover
I like that interior. Linen over black?
I wish you and your new GT a long and pleasurable future together.
