I think I shy away from many chemicals because I've seen/done some stupid things when I was a kid. Using Acetone for example to clean a plastic lense on a toy resulted in a permanently fogged over lense. My mom spilled nail polish on a piece of plastic in my dads new MB and the result was completely warped trim, not good! Crazy glue also fogs over on clear lenses and picks up finger prints, so I couldn't use it on models. The wrong type of loctite will disentegrate plastic very quickly, that was a costly mistake when building my radio controlled truck. I could go on and on but you get the point.
Since I don't know longer term affects of many chemicals nor do I have the time to research compatibility of a particular compound and solvent I just take the less aggressive approach. I take this approach with new detailing products also. I tend to wait a couple of years before using something and I wait for the hype to die down and the real feedback to come through. It saves a great deal of time, money and aggravation. If people still rave about a product 2 - 3 years down the road and the complaints are minor it is worth a try.
