There is no need to add oil to any other components. If you flush the condenser and replace the compressor, add the amount that was drained from the compressor plus the percentage of total that was in the condenser, but you can add it directly into the compressor. The oil will be redistributed roughly according to the Porsche TSB after the system is started up anyway.

There's a pressed in plug at the bottom of the both the new and old compressors...........is that what your reffering to? If so how is it removed and reinstalled?

Hmm, all the 6E171's I have seen have a bolt that is threaded into the underside. Do you have a pic of yours?

Be right back.

Here's the topside with the plates that have to be swapped out for hoses. Once removed the compressor could be inverted to drain.

The bottom side:

Oh snap, looks like some of these compressors did not have a hole drilled/tapped in the bottom. No worries, yes you can just remove the plates and turn the compressor upside down. When you do this, make sure to turn the center of the pulley to rotate the compressor internals to get all the oil out.

In that picture of the bottom of the compressor that Malcolm posted, there's a white piece that looks like it's sticking out between the compressor body and the pulley. Mine has a piece of what looks like felt sticking out there that usually has a drop of oil hanging from it. I always thought that it was some kind of seal that was leaking and in the process of coming out on my compressor. Since the one in the picture is a new compressor, I guess that piece is supposed to stick out like that? Anybody know what that is, and what it's purpose is?

No worries Dan............I removed the plates, inverted the compressor over a measuring jar and got just over 110cc (~5oz) which is the quantity Zeus recommended. The oil is cloudy and smells like rubber.

Larry, I dont know the answer to your question but my old compressor which I assume is original has the same 'felt' piece at the same location.

The WSM states 280cc of total oil and also states that the compressor should hold 40% of total so I'll flush then refill with 112cc of the correct ester oil.

Thx for everyones input especially Roger and Zeus who both called last night.

The felt is for oil absorbtion and to direct the oil dripping from possible leakage. The front seal is the weak link in all compressors. The engineers wanted to keep the oil away from the clutch surface. This is to prevent clutch slippage and possible fire.

Thanks. I've been planning to replace the front seal, figuring that the oil on that felt is probably a good indication of that being where my refrigerant leak is.

We have a chinook wind Colin..............as soon as the temps go plus its spring

BTW Roger and I have been trying to get a/c hoses rebuilt but so far no joy; do you know of a shop this side of the border?

For those who were playing along or may find this thread here's a pic of ester and the oil that came out the new compressor; the ester is on the left.
