WTB: '87- 5-speed manual 928
#31
Be patient for the right car. I was the one that bought Jarrod Wise's 90 GT for 25K, 2 years later I regrettably sold it for 27K. I had been looking for a really nice 928 for 4 years. Jarrod had taken the car to the shop I use for a PPI for someone else and they called me. The other deal fell through and I ended up with the car.

If someobody would sometimes outbid me, then I would put my failure to buy one in my column. But if time after time I am the highest bidder, it's at least not obvious that I am wrong about the price levels.
When the price gap is bridged and these 5-speeds start trading again, I am happy to buy one. Even if the market price settles to a higher level than where I predicted. I just don't want to be the only sucker paying 2008 prices.
Look, I know I may be pissing some people off by writing stuff like this. I am not doing this to agitate anybody. I am just looking to buy a car at some price that is close to whatever the average price for 2009 will be.
The situation is the same with houses. Generally, one can't buy a house right now, because the asking prices are much higher than the market clearing level. Buyers don't buy and the sellers don't sell, until they have to because of a divorce, layoffs, babies, etc. And at that point, they'll be holding a firesale. Nobody wins.

But have you even tried contacting the seller of the car in question? I dont understand how so many people dont take the time to call or contact a seller of a car to ask a few questions.
Write the guy, ask about the car, inquire about the reserve and try and make a deal outside of ebay.
i clearly post my phone number on my ad's and can really separate the buyers from the tire kickers when they actually take the time to call you and speak to you. Its hard to SELL a car to someone over internet communication, its much easier when you can actually speak to someone and they can get an idea of who you are and your true intentions.
If your serious about the car, contact the seller. If you cant be bothered to do that, then i cant imagine your too serious to buy the car.

There is also a 1990 GT black on black with 20,000 miles on ebay now too, no idea what the guy is looking to get for it but show them your serious and not just a hawk looking to beat their price down and i think you will have more success.

Patience. You haven't bought one because a gap exists between what you believe the market price to be and are willing to pay, vs. what the seller believes the market price to be and is willing to accept. I still think you're in the ballpark, albeit possibly on the lower end. As such, it may take a while to find the car you want at the price you want. Like I said previously, if you see one you really like, sometimes you just have to break down and pay the man...

Interesting thread. I missed this one until today.
ptuomov (what's your name, BTW?) - I don't think you're being at all unrealistic in what you're looking for and what you consider a reasonable price. I don't know who said it here, but I agree that there seems to be a large gap in values between acceptable cars and really nice low mileage cars. Your criteria seem to be at the high end, and that will obviously take more time.
It seems to me that most pristine, low mileage cars have less-than highly motivated sellers who likely have more money and sentiment in their car than most. These aren't the cars that end up at auctions or as trade-ins (except for the few that Lowmiler and Willhoit seem to find). Some of them have loftier-than-realistic prices like the BIN in Ryan's example. Whether they come down in price all depends on how badly they want to sell their car.
But then, you just get lucky. Like Afshin. A fellow lister or a collector has a gem that he's willing to part with without too much aggravation. You've got to be ready to jump when those opportunities arise. Sounds like you are. In this economy, I'd think that those opportunities are going to be popping up more frequently as luxury items are being pared back and collections consolodated more and more.
Hang tight, keep your eagerness in check, follow this forum, and don't settle for something less, as it almost always leads to a short-term, quick and expensive fix.
This black '91 is right in my neck of the woods. I totally missed this one on eBay. I may have seen this pop up on DC CL a year or so ago @ a price in the $20's IIRC. I talked to the seller for a while about the car. Nice guy. If it's the same car, he's put a lot of work & $ into it since then; and he hasn't been too motivated to sell....or hasn't had a serious buyer talk to him about price since then.
If this one's still out there (it was as of 2/3) and turns out to have potential, there's a bunch of local guys in the DC burbs and Northern VA that could take a look for you.

Right now, I am in Europe and emailing with a potential seller in Flint, MI. By the way, if someone knows a PPI shop they recommend there, please let me know. If that falls thru, then I'll probably be in the mix for that VA '91 gt.

Ptuomov,
I have a black 1989 5-speed with about 78,000 miles that I don't want to, but need to sell soon. I am located in Westport MA which should be close enough for you to come take a look at yourself. The car is in excellent shape and mostly stock except for a Momo steering wheel, RMB, and 17" cup wheels. All major services has been done. I have all receipts and service history from myself and previous owner.
