Default Wanted, "X" pipe for 1984

I am getting my belt done at a local shop. While it is there I figure I would have an "X" Pipe installed. Anyone have one for sale. I plan on doing this Feb 10, 2009.

I have never seen an X for the pre 85 cars only a Y.
I would think it would have to be fabricated as a special.

The 16V cars (pre 84 US market) have a single exhaust versus the dual exahust on later cars. The X-pipe takes the place of both cats on a later car. Since your car only has a single pipe and one cat, an x-pipe doesn't work.

What you need is a replacement Y pipe to replace the CAT:

I'm not sure if anyone has done a before / after dyno with a Y-pipe before. Any dyno's near you?

If all you want to do is delete the Cat, get a Ypipe from one of the suppliers on here. If the whole exhaust is original, I would suggest either getting a Borla Cat back system, or deleting the rear muffler. An example of this can be found in a thread by Lopez call "Easy homebrew RMB for OB's".

Stephen,
Y pipe on its way today.
It will work perfectly with your Borla cat back.
Thanks for the business.

ROW 84 models have twin exhaust pipes am I not right? My 80 Euro S has twin pipes that is for sure. One interesting aspect of the Euro S (like mine) without cats is that I believe the first silencer acts as some sort of X-pipe because the two perforated pipes going through the same housing allows excess pressure to bleed into the other pipe. I guess this will not create any scavenging effect like a abrupt change like a X-pipe though.

Edit: Here is a combination of a X-pipe and a silencer.

Ian,
I am pretty sure you are correct on the 84+ ROW cars.
Maybe earlier as I am pretty sure my 83 Euro had a twin exhaust.
I was generally refering to US cars.

I have an 84 Euro dual exhaust and an X would work on it, I have cats from an 88 on there now,
and the X is on my 88.
Shane got me a nice factory cat back Dual exhaust setup , its the early one,
I am sure there are others here that may also have the rear sections sitting around, Leslie comes to mind

Stephen,

I do not know if this will help, however it is what I did to my 1980 Euro S when the lousey Ansa exhaust on it finally fell apart. I went with a MagnaFlow dual in/dual out TrueX Muffler, it has a flow path that is the same as an X-pipe, and replaced the entire exhaust. The muffler was placed where the front muffler was on my Euro, where US cars have thier cat. It fit prefectly and the heat shields remaind in place. I went a with 2.25" muffler and pipes to match the exhaust manifold exit daimeter. the pipes have gentle bends, fit easily under the rear crossmember and exit in the stock location. I had the shop weld several cross braces between the pipes to keep them from rattling against each other. The exhaust is much lighter than Ansa exhaust. It has made quire a difference in the performance. The engine revs much quicker than before and I have to be careful not to hit the redline. The sound is not offensive at idle but becomes and angry shiek above 3200 RPM. The cost for the entire system was less than a X-pipe, less than 400.00 dollars three years ago. There are some photos of the exhaust on the 928OC web site, they where taken at the 2007 Wilbraham tech session. The muffler comes in two lengths and I selected the shorter of the two. I do not know if a US care will see the performance improvement my Euro did due to its lower compression, softer cams, smaller valves, ports, intake and throttle body.

Good Luck

My Euro 1983s has an X pipe fitted and RMB, so yes the European 928s do have double pipes.

Mrmerlin.... shame on you. I really don't think Leslie would appreciate your representation that her "rear sections are sitting around". Every post I have seen from her she's standing up next to her 928!

The Euro S front exhaust muffler is a two in two out muffler that is fitted where the cat conv would be on a USA model. The USA 1985 and early 1986 used the same style two pipe side by side "dual exhaust".

Have you considered an O-pipe?
