Default Alternative speedometers?

My speedometer is not working. : ( & it seems a new speedo is no longer available from Porsche. Second hand units are still quite expensive & could quite easily stop working a week, month, or year after I buy one.
Just wondering what other speedometer devices have been installed by owners on this list? Are there any other reliable short-term or long-term options for fixing this?

Thanks List,

Tom

While it is possible, the speedometer itself is the least likely cause of your problem (assuming that both the speedometer and the odo have failed).

The connector in the spare tire well and the edge connector inside the pod are much more likely suspects.

Until you get this sorted, the Garmin GPS portable units provide a reliable speedometer and odometer within their navagation systems.

You know you need one of those anyway.

Thats a great idea. I forgot the GPS has a Speedo on it. My Tom Tom does this also.

You can have your Speedo rebuilt, there are a few companies out there that do it. Also 928 International has rebuilt units available. I just recently had mine rebuilt, the needle shaft broke when I was attempting to remove the needle.

This may not be your issue though.

I just replaced the silly 85 mph unit in my 81 with a 160 mph unit out of a 944. plugged & played. Checked it w/GPS.

Be careful. The earlier 944's have totally different (IMHO prettier) gauges. Look for 85.5 up.

I'd say based on what we have seen here the 928 speedo's are very reliable. Most of the issues I've heard of are wiring/sensor related -so I'd check that first and if needs be try a speedo repair or replacement with a direct drop in 928 unit.

Yes-this was a later 944 unit. Can't tell the diff.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Have checked & double-checked all wiring & diff sensor, & speedo tests fine in workshop, so looking for alternatives - some of these sound good!
Cheers,
Tom
