Default Lifter rattle on cold start-up ?

My car is currently hibernating, however I like to start it up every 2 to 3 weeks to get everything circulating etc, recently but not every time I start it, the lifters rattle for about 3mins, once warm it,s gone, untill maybe the next time.

I,ve done a search on the above problem with no definitive results, so what I,d like to know has anyone else experienced this, and what if any, was their solution....,I read somewhere/sometime that there is a relief valve situated in one of the cam covers that needs attention, but must admit sounded daunting to carry out etc.

Any advice/help would be most appreciated.

I have a 79 Euro and it does the same thing when sitting for a while. The lifters tap/rattle for a while and then it goes away. I was thinking about running some seafoam through the engine before I change my oil this Spring to see if I can loosen any crud that has accumulated to see if that helps.

My 81 was doing that off & on. I put some Marvel Mystery Oil in it. Don't know yet if that will keep it from coming back, but it worked on other cars I've owned.

The oil that you are using may be too thick when cold.

Your car does not have the oil drainback check valves - 32-valve only.

Divided opinions on cranking one in storage - many people feel that it causes more wear and problems than it prevents.

it would be better to leave the car off till you can drive it, you may do more damage to the car by doing what your doing...
It is amazing when i worked at a shop we had a few 928s that stayed parked outside and not started or moved, and every one of them would start up without any fuss with a fresh battery installed. a few of these car would sit for 4 months or more before being started and driven, some would tap but after they got warm and were driven the taps usually went away

My storage recommendations include fresh coolant and oil before storage, drive the car enough to get everything to full temperature, then park it. If we had steel engines we'd add oil into the spark plug holes. Pull the battery and store it separately in a warm place with a maintainer on it. Less than six months storage is with a full tank and fuel stabilizer, otherwise drain it completely. Toss-up between the effects of condensation and sour fuel.

How long do yopu plan to keep the car from normal service?

.,many thanks for all the advice everyone, iv,e owned the car for 18 years and it,s only in the past 2 or 3 winters that Iv,e experienced the noisy lifter syndrome, and then not too frequently.

Oil is Castrol 14/40 semi , as regards lay-up time it,s usually around 4 months, my garage is also heated and de-humidified......, and, wait for it............., carpeted, not because I want to cosset my 928 too much, but because if ?,.. there is any damp in the air at all, a carpet draws any damp air away from metallic surfaces......, and yes it definately works.

The battery is left on the car, disconnected via a Master switch in the rear tool tray, and in turn the battery is connected to a battery maintainer/ trickle charge.

Thanks for keeping me right WallyP, I thought all 928,s had the check valve.

While I have heard many who get tappett noise go for a heavier oil, the solution is usually a thinner oil to ensure it can get through the galleries and small holes that may be partly occluded by crud. Have never had noise in the 928, but the Miata did, until I went to 5W40 Delvac, and we are a bit warmer than Newcastle here in Oz!
