ATF level

ATF level
What is the correct procedure for adjusting ATF level? I have replaced AT cooler lines and filled the transmission to between the lines with the engine running and shifter in park. What got me wondering is after a few minutes of running the level is way above normal. What should I do?

According to the WSM, here is how to check the trans fluid.
*Check ATF Level
Also check appearance and odor of ATF.
Burnt friction linings cause a burnt odor.
Contaminated oil could cause failure in valve
body.
In this case transmission must be removed
and repaired or replaced. ATF lines and
cooler must also be flushed.
ATF level check is carried out at engine idle
speed, parking brake applied and selector
lever at "N". Car must be on level surface.
Let engine run at idle speed 1 to 2 minutes
before checking fluid level, so that torque
converter will be full.
ATF level can be checked on a cold or warm
transmission. However, the level will
be more accuate on a cold transmission
(20 to 30 degree C/ 68 to 86 F ATF tempeture)
than on a warm transmission (80 C/ 176 F)
ATF temperature). ATF temperature of
80C/176F can only be estimated.
This information came from 38-102 of the WSM.

What year of car do you have?
There's 3 marks on the reservoir on the '88 model..............the upper 2 are for the fill level as described in Seans post.

have you run the selector through the gears when idling , then checked the level?
(IE P to D then N then R then N to 2 then to N then to 3 then N to R then N then P) Note always go to Neutral before selecting another range this will let the internals slow down

As implied above, the top line is the max level with the transmission "warm", the second line is the minimum with the transmission "cold", and the fluid level should never be below the lowest line with the engine running.
