Going to Mesa/Phoenix...what to do?
I'll be in Mesa/Phoenix all next week. I have tickets for the Barrett-Jackson auto auction. What else should I try to take in? What do you do when your're in that area to take your mind off work?

Contact the local Phoenix area 928 gang. Lots of awesome people there: Alan, Rich, Rick,... When I was there with my parents three years ago, we went for dinner at a really cool steak place. My dad still talks about his experience there.

Bring your clubs. Once you get thawed (see post 2 above...), you'll find a slew of good courses. Phoenix weather for today is predicted to be only 68º, so you may want to wear long pants if you get an early tee time.
There's a reason [snow]birds go south for the winter.
On a distantly-related note, a friend who lives in Surprise (west end and a little north) reports that there are plenty of places there for sale relatively cheap. Great place to live for eight months of the year, unless you really like the summer heat. K wants to drive over and buy a place for permanent residence. Would need a 3-4 car climate-controlled garage at minimum, and those don't seem to happen in planned golf communities.

Last summer we overnighted at the above location and ate at the Black Angus Restaurant. Next to I-17, I recommend. In the same huge complex just north is a Marriott or some chain hotel if you don't already have res. The same complex has theme park as in rides, etc. very kid oriented if you need same.
We look foreward to phone pics from BJ

Pinnacle Peak steaks are pretty good, location-location-location of course, up on Pinnacle Peak. Wear an old tie.
John, you'll need a 944 stuffed with money. Dump the 944, keep the money and the hood ornament. Collateral damage from keeping those things makes them unrealistic though.

The Rusty Pelican is no more (its a Joe's Crab Shack now) if you are going to have steak - go to a unique place like Pinnacle Peak (where we took Nicole) or go to a really good steak place like Ruth Chris Steak House ($$) - or you can ride a horse through South Mountain to the T-Bone steak house - did that last week.
Plenty of interesting things to do - some nice short drives - e.g. Superstition Mountains and Canyon Lake for example - or some of the long distance suggestions before (add Sedona, Jerome & Tombstone to this list).
In town there are the 4 big sports, ASU's Mill Ave in the evenings, ride the new light rail system to downtown (just opened) or check out some museums... Not much history in Phoenix, but there is great off road 4 wheeling, hiking, hot air balooning, sailplanes, parachute jumping (outdoor or indoor!). Bob Bondurants driving school is at Firebird raceway... and there is always BiosphereII... You can ski out in the white mountains (recent snow) or near Flagstaff (or even waterski in town - but its a bit brrrr! for the locals).

One more thing that wasn't mentioned, yet: The Frank Lloyd Wright Campus East of Scottsdale. I thought it was very interesting. Highly recommended!
Alan: Where exactly is Biosphere? How far from Scottsdale?
Oh, and beware of the speed cameras on the 101 Freeway around Scottsdale.

Suns game (check the schedule) http://www.nba.com/suns/schedule/
Heart Attack Grille http://www.heartattackgrill.com/photos.html <- CLICK Link :-) Puts Hooters to shame.
Golf - take your pick - the only thing to consider is how much money you want to spend.
You miss our track weekend - Both Nasa and Pro Auto are running this weekend.
Good Seafood. The Salt Cellar on Hayden Rd in Scottsdale
Steak - Montes on Mill
