Default Slow odometer

The odometer on my 86.5 5-speed has started ticking over rather slowly (it shows about one mile for every three). It seems like if the gear was broken it would stop completely. It seems to move smoothly (as opposed to intermittently), but is clearly not accurate. Any thoughts?

This happened on my Audi. One of the gears was cracked and not completely broken.

Sounds very much like the odo gear has started to fail - disintergrate.
It could be the teeth on the ultra small ring on the gear which would give the effect you are seeing.

Replacement gear is $27.50.
