Default heater core question??

Happy new year to you all;
Im spending the christmas/newyear hols doing some jobs on my 84 euro.
Specifically sorting out the heating. ive got no heater motor, and have read the past posts on the various reasons for this. ive taken the whole assy out to re seal and clean. I have a 91 heater core on my shelf. What is the feelings as to wether i should replace the existing core with the later model... and are there any compatibility problems between the newer core and the cars wiring/functionality????

Regards

Geoff

Geoff,

According to a quick check in PET they are the same part number so you should be good to go with no fitment issues.

Judging from heater core leaks I have heard of on lots of earlier 928s (typically 78-80ish) I would probably swap it out for the 91 core.

Happy New Year.

Hi Geoff,

You are very welcome.

Jeannie just told me to tell you "Hi" and "Happy New Year"

One more tip would be to do a simple leak test on the 91 core before installing it. As you know it is major pain to get the HVAC box out and it would suck if it had a leak. If it came from a wrecked 928 if could have gotten damaged and/or even tweaked when it was removed.

Other than giving it a close visual inspection find a rubber cap that fits either the inlet or outlet (doesn't matter which one) of the core and clamp it on. Then find a rubber hose for the other side and clamp it also. You may need to step down the hose size with smaller hoses depending on your air source fitting. Then use a regulated air supply at approx 10psi to pump air into the core thru the hose. I use my Cylinder leak down tester for this as the spark plug fitting seems to fit the hose size needed and it is easy to regulate the pressure. Once this is done submerge the core into a shop sink (or bathtub :-) and give it a few seconds for the trapped air bubbles to clear out. Watch it closely and make sure you don't have a steady stream of bubbles anywhere. If not you should be good to go.

This is quick and easy and actually takes less time then it did for me to type this :-)

Hope that helps,
