Default Engine Knock

When starting the 85 5 spd I heard a knocking noise, oil pressure good so I continued to let it run and raised it up in the air to listen closer to the engine. The noise quickly disappeared so I had someone rev it up while I was under it and it sounded more like a thud when snapping the throttle. My first fear was the thrust bearing had worn out because I have heard that noise before in one of my old mustangs years ago,so I shut it off and went back under to check it out and found my harmonic balancer separated into two pieces and the outer ring spining freely.
Could this be that noise and how or why would the balancer separate like this?

It is a 23 year old chunk of rubber that was vulcanized to the two metal rings. Also some "mechanics" have tried using wheel pullers and /or levered on the balancer to get them off during a t-belt service . We sell several each year !

You have to remember we have 74,000 contacts in our data base.....the fact that we sell several per year is a very , very LOW failure rate. Good used should be fine if i fails in a year we give you another at no charge. Besides it is not hard to change and causes no additional damage in the unlikely event that it does fail....
