Default What years have the 85 MPH speedo?

I just received my cluster and it has an 85 MPH speedo, what years carried this abomination? Is there a way to change this via face plate or gear?

Lifted from Wiki....." On September 1, 1979, in a rulemaking that also regulated speedometer and odometer accuracy, the NHTSA required speedometers to have special emphasis on the number 55 and a maximum speed of 85 mph. However, on October 22, 1981, the NHTSA proposed eliminating speedometer and odometer rules because they were "unlikely to yield significant safety benefits" and "[a] highlighted '55' on a speedometer scale adds little to the information provided to the driver by a roadside speed limit sign." ....However some auto makers continued to fit the "leftover" 85 MPH speedos for several years.

I have the 85 mph speedo on my '81. I figure if I ever get pulled over upward 130, I can always claim I thought I was going 85.

Thumbs up

Rog,
Pattycakes, The Wunder-Weissach, is not equipped with the 85 mph speedo.
However, I do have a complete pod assy in excellent condition (black, of course)
with the 85 mph.
I bought it from Brendan C. ( thanks again, Bro ) in his early -not yet chronic stage- disassembler mode.
I think he said it was 81 or earlier.

Stupid ? will it work or will it break at 86, I remember the stories about muscle cars bending the needle,"no that I would ever go that fast . I have an option on another one with out the Mpg gauge but I'm sure there will be wiring issues. Then I have plan B!

I had my old 81 (with 85 mph speedo) up to 125+ without breaking the speedo.

My old 80 had it. Almost got me out of an excessive speeding ticket.

No problem with the speedo just keep pressing the gas pedal.
I use GPS to monitor the speed.
