In my mind, the H gives the sound waves another path to bounce around in, unrelated to gas pressure. I don't think the H on my X-pipe helps with extraction, but it does seem to change the sound (and is a nice spot for the O2 sensor).

I think a valve at the rear, like Greg Gray has, would make a bigger difference in sound than at the front, as it turns one whole side into an expansion chamber. My valve at the front is for a (yet to be dyno proven) increase in low rpm torque. At idle, there is little difference in sound, open or closed.

How about trying out a H at the header junction?

(AFAIK, the connecting pipe doesn't need to be as large as the pipe.)
