Any one tried this..that is taking the original wheels like my 93 gts and widening so I can put 315's on the rear..why you say....cause I still like the look of the original wheel only on the 93. Not that fiske et al..are not nice looking . I just like the 93's look.

Make sure a 17" is available in the size you want before jumping in.
That is why I stopped using the custom 16" Pone dials that I have, not much available in 16" anymore.

I had the phone dials widened from 7 inches to 9 inches. Pretty simple. They cut the inner lip off and weld in a new lip from a donor wheel. It has been about three years and no problem. here is a pic from the rear with the phone dials.
I had it done at Wheels America in Dallas.

thanks for your reply Hacher and Sterling,
I searched and found weldwheels can do it...the tires are the goodyear F1 unidirectionals and the 315's and wider they recommend 10.5 or wider rims.

I've been having wheels widened for the past 20 + yrs (zero problems)
recently I've been using Weldcraft with good results. & fwiw, when their
done truing the rim it is so straight and well balanced that it only requires
a 1/4 of the normal wheel weights compared to the fronts that were oem
and not widened -- I think your rims look great on a 928, and are definitely
worth the effort -- Enjoy !

There is a shop in Wilmington DE that is narrowing some Corvette wheels (so they can be used as spares). They might be able to do it - contact me if you want/need info about them.

Please post up your final specs if you do it.
Jeez, and all the work I went through to locate some (merely) 8" wide 16" dia phone dials.
OK, it wasn't THAT tough, but still...

There is a place in MI that widens wheels as well. I think they are in Plymouth. A friend has used them and they do very nice work. I believe it was ~$300/wheel.

One local S4 has 10.5" wide 17" Cup II wheels. Each done from two part, one part each from 7" and 9" IIRR. ET number is something like 67mm. 315 fit barely when fenders are rolled. There is less than ½" space in every direction.

I've been thinking of this for awhile now too. You would need 8 wheels to widen a set and if done right, I don't think spacers will be needed either.

Yes, nice idea and it's an old one. Unfortunately as Eric says, finding the tires is the tough part these days....at least road tires.
I have a plan for 16" (x7")chrome manhole covers for a concept 928 I have been thinking about. The beauty of all of this is the offset (if I can use this term) on the outside doesn't change. You are adding to the inside of the wheel which works great for the fronts. Just use spacers in the back and you can end up with a great stance and proper filling of the wheel wells. I think it's possible to go 10's all the way around.
