If the VIN begins WP0ZZZ92ZASxxxxxx then the car is an '80 MY which as Brutus mentioned above were made from August '79 and the car likely has the original engine.
'79 MY cars didn't have the new standardised VIN number that begins with "WP0ZZZ"; that was only introduced in '80 MY in Europe

'81 was first MY with 17 digit long VIN, '80 MY has its own 11 digit long number style. '79 first registration date can mean car is any one of these:
As numbers say, ROW S model has different VIN sequence than same MY ROW 4.5L.

Ah my mistake - I just tracked back from KS (my car's 89) and figured AS would be the introduction of the 17 digit style.

MY engine came out of an 81 Euro S. Found it in San Antonio at a BMW parts recycler yard. AFAIK they were not available in the 79 models unless as previously stated, it was a really an 80 model retitled as a 79.
