RE: The rectangular piece adjacent to the door vents (below right)

Although the flash has greatly exaggerated the effect, this piece has a noticeable brown tint to it. The piece to the upper left of the vents has also started to turn, at least relative to the rest of the black trim. Has anyone else observed this in their car? I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, and this is really bugging me.

Never seen that before. May a suggest some textured black "rattle-can" paint? Make sure you scuff it up first.

I haven't noticed that in sharky....but its fairly easy to replace those with new-er ones or just redye or repaint the ones you have now.....I bet leatherique dye would work fine.....

Guys- won't paint scratch off easily?

I haven't tried yet, but I suppose it's a seperate piece that can be easily replaced. Best way to get at it appears to be 1. pull out the air vents 2. pop out the rectangular piece by pressing it from the backside.

May try to re-dye it first, although the piece can't be that expensive to simply replace.

Wish the engineers at BMW would've asked that b4 they designed the X3...

So it's on the passenger door, which isn't used as much, and it's not in a high wear area, and you car's a garage queen anyway. I say paint it.

OTOH, a replacement part would cost as much a a can-o-rattle.... I'm not much help tonite.

If you are going to paint it I would use SEM flexible color coat paint. The landau black #15013 is a good match for black interiors. I just restored my pod and used this, it is very tough and will resist scratches.

Krylon semi flat black will match that part, wash it with dish soap and hot water, give a bit of a scuff with a scotchbrite pad and a few quick passes and you will forget all about your discolored plastic

Replace it. Why mess with anything less than perfection if that is what you're after. At $6 I would replace both sides so they match.

Doesn't look fadded...looks like a replacement from a Cashmere interior...Painting would work. Really it shouldn't scratch to badly...when does that area get a lot of handling??? Its a hard surface as well so paint would be your friend.

In this economy???

Just kidding. Thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like I have two good options.

I'm still surprised mine is apparently the only one that has done this. And I should emphasize again, the flash greatly exaggerates the brownish tint. In normal light, it's somewhat noticeable but nowhere near that dramatic.

I think before I'd go nuts and start painting or replacing,
I'd put some wax on it. After all it is subjected to more sunlight then any other plastic interior part in the car with exception of the lock ****.

on my 944 Turbo the dash trim strip that goes from window switch on the door across the dash with the A/C controls to the other door was that same sort of brown when I got the car. It was so brown that the BROWN sports seats I got matched it perfectly. Everything else in the car interior was black. I think the plastic just turns from black to brown over time.

If you don't want to mess with those, you could just recover your seats to match and replace other trim pieces to make it a two tone interiror
