Best approach for replacing the rear spoiler on an '88 S4
I think my rear spoiler is shot. Earlier ths year, I began noticing what looked like somebody spitting tobacco juice on my rear bumper, LOL. I didn't think too much of it at first; I first noticed it on a trip to Florida. I just figured some weird bug was coming out at night and descended on my bumper.
I was then told by a fellow 928 owner here in town that something is 'dripping' out of the spoiler onto the bumper (as a result of a missing, incomplete, or bad seals between the spoiler and the hatch).
I took my car into a reputable body shop today (who regularly work on Porsches) looking for an estimate to reseal the spoiler 'attach points', and clean up the dried spill on the bumper.
The body shop owner told me he can see several 'splits' in the seams of the spoiler, and that water is probably getting in, rusting, and then getting out. He advised that I should consider getting a new spoiler altogether. He specifically recommened I get a factory one, not an aftermarket one.
My question is what is the best approach here. Should I go for the factory OEM wing (supposedly around $1300), or just get another aftermarket one and hope it lasts for a while before disintegrating.
Either way, the body shop guy said he'll be happy to clean up the bumper and install the new wing, regardless of which one I go for.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

The fiberglass spoilers are made in two pieces then glued together, they are hollow inside. It is quite easy to take them apart and glue them back together using more glue for a stronger bond ( Just be careful not to get it in the threaded bolt holes) . A little bit of body work on the seams then it is ready to paint.

Do an eBay search for 928 GTS - completed items. There was one listed there that did not sell. You can communicate with the seller ('93 GTS wrecked at salvage yard). Maybe they'll re-list it with a Buy it Now price.

Thanks, I just saw it. They won't sell it outside of Ebay, but I'll contact them and maybe they'll re-list it.
Can you tell me the differences--in quality and manufacturing techniques-- between the spoilers that were factory-fitted on the GTS cars and the aftermarket fiberglass spoilers?
Thanks,
Rick

The factory GTS is the same solid rubber unit as an S-4 but with a smooth finish (some have sanded and painted an S-4 wing ) They are much heavier , extra "downforce"

Jim,
It's surprising, but the two GTS wings I have had (OE, not aftermarket) were significantly lighter than the rubber S4 wings I've had. The OE wings will actually fit the holes that are on the S4's, while the aftermarket ones do not have the bolts in the correct place, and require some modification of the holes in the hatch (yes, I had one of these as well).
