Default Question on jacking height

Can somebody tell me the dimension required between the ground and the lifting pads to make the tires clear the ground ?

I am making a car dolly to hold my new project car. I'm currently at work and do not have a car here to jack and measure. I realize there are variables but I will adjust accordingly. I don't want to make it any higher than necessary.

Welder standing by.....any quick answers appreciated.

Just a quick measurement if this is all you need:
Right now, car level on lift bars, on jackstands, puts the drivers rear pad 17 inches off the ground and the rear tire in place is 6 inches off the ground so the rough answer is 11 inches on my car....
If the pad was 11 inches off the ground the rear tire would be just barely touching the ground.
Do you need more detail than that?
Tire is 255/40 ZR17

Craig, that's exactly what I was after. Thanks!

I'll post a picture of the finished product.

Add an inch or so for a pre-86.5 car, because the lift pads are closer to the body compared to Craig's S4.

Good point...I was not aware of that. The car I am storing is a 79'.

I'm using 14" as my target. That is within the stroke of my floor jacks without blocking and repositioning. My goal is to jack up the car using suspension points and then slide the dolly under. The dolly will hit the four jack pads.

I am using 8"x 2" phenolic casters with swivel locks and brakes. It will work well on less than perfect floors or even winching on to my car trailer.
