Default '84 S2... Hot start problem

I'm going to look at an 84 S2 at the weekend which the seller says has a hot start problem... he describes it as starting from totally cold, not starting from sort of mid temp, then starting fine when the car has been run up to temp?

Any ideas? Expensive fix? Things to look out for?

Any advice very much appreciated.

Thanks

Llewelyn :-)

It's worth a shot, and not too bad if you're careful.

Excellent - He has some spare relays so I will give it a shot should I buy the car :-) he seemed to think it might be to do with a voltage drop on the battery which I think is unlikely.

Hot starts could be fuel related (e.g. fuel pressure regulator, fuel damper, fuel injector, fuel pump, fuel pump check valve, and/or the accumulator) or they could be electrically related (relay, battery/alt, corrosion, bad wire, failing coil, et al).

Bring a $2 spray can of starter fluid for your test drive. See if spraying in a little starter fluid "cures" a bad hot start if you encounter it. That will help narrow down the problem to fuel or spark, either way.

spraying anything into someone elses car could cost you money, I wouldnt try it, its like fixing someone elses problem.

What happens if the ignition wires are bad and they ignite the spray somehow, poof engine could go up in flames,
For diagnosis you could bring a myty vac and an ohm meter pull off the damper vac lines and check them as well as the temp 2 of course you will be like McGiver working on someone elses problem child

I have already seen a 928 catch fire from a spark from a bad set of ignition wires, lucky there was a charged hose on the ground and it took about 5 seconds to grab and spray, otherwise the car could have burned down the garage

It is. It is also great that the seller is this honest. But shouldn't the owner be doing this? I mean solving this known problem before he sells it.
If you hook the chain to someone else's car, you pay the tow. I mean if you damage his car. If you hand the chain to him, and he hooks it around the tie rod, you are not responsible.

A quick update to say I have bought the car! YO! :-)

(the seller fitted a new battery and apparently this has now cured the fault - time will tell i guess but it is definately worth the £1500 I am paying for it!)

I'll post some pics up when I pick it up!
