Default Power antenna mast gone bad: Question

Well looks like my power antenna mast has bit the dust. Motor runs but mast appears to be locked up. Probably a ribbon issue. Here's the question. The stock antenna is way to large when extended(Yea I can hear the joke too ) I want a smaller version of the power antenna. One that is shorter when extended. If I can't find a shorter version I may go to a fixed antenna with a very short mast. Have any of you done anything like this? Opinions? Suggestions? Jason

My '81 did same thing a couple of years ago. I ordered another, and while waiting for it decided to take a look at broken one. Opened it up and found the end of ribbon had broken. Cut about 4" off (just past broken part) reattached, reinstalled, reassembled and it works again. There are some tiny parts you need to keep an eye on in the shaft when disassembling, but pretty easy fix. Hope this helps.

You need to know if you have the smooth or rough inner cable - apparently the drive wheel is different.

Thanks guys I'm pulling it this weekend and I'll go from there. I'd sure like to find a shorter version. Maybe go aftermarket and get one with less sections or something.

My second one is also just now going bad. I thought about using one of those small, black whip antenna's (permanetly mounted and about a foot long), I didn't know how it would affect the reception, and the looks. I had one on my RX7, and was quite happy with it. I may give it a try.

I don't think I would go the rubber whip route.

Ok pulled antenna and the plastics ribon cable was busted Antenna motor still works. I ran it in again just shorter. I'd run it that way but it's to short and runs of the sprocket now. Guess it's another antenna for me.
